The Kansas City Athletics Wednesday canceled "with re gret" their working agreement with Portland. The Beavers also are not certain of a place to play next season because Mult nomah Stadium where they nor mally perform is for sale. Portland's future in the PCL probably will be decided at the minor league meetings in San Diego Dec. 1-3. "I don't know where we can go from here. Owl Outlook By Wanda Burleson ' By WANDA BURLESON ' Tlie young Owl grid squad has found out the hard way that a .game lasts four quarters not two! In the past two weeks the Owls' second half "let down" has cost them one game and almost a second. Tlie Owl first half effort is usually out standing but the last two quar ters they have lacked the en thusiasm and alertness of their earlier performances. Such was tlie case when OCE exploded in the second half last Saturday. Tlie Wolves almost blemished the Owl Homecoming. However, it was an Owl defensive effort that stopped the OCE crew from upending the OTl crew in .the final minutes of the game. Consistent good play is the sure key to success. : There were moments last Sat urday when it appeared the OCE coaching staff would have to "suit up." The injury-laden Wolves made it obvious they were in poor shape. Condition ing has been the key to tlie lack of injuries on the Owl squad. The OTl coaching staff has emphasized their condition ing as tlie important factor in their program. Tlie mam ideal behind a rigid conditioning pro gram is that a boy who is in peak physical sha Is less prone to football injuries. A 1 1 Owl athletes arc encouraged to train on a year-round program, i When a team lacks depth ev ery individual Is extremely im portant. It is obvious that if more schools encouraged good conditioning programs there would be less gridiron injuries, i The Owls take to tlie open road this week. Tomorrow they challenge Eastern Oregon on Davis Cup Draw Due BOMBAY, India. (UPH -Tlie draw for the interzone Davis cup final between the United Stales and India was scheduled to take place Unlay with cither Frank Kroehling or Dennis Ral ston joining Wimbledon cham pion Chuck McKinlry in tlie smslcs. The besl-nf-five scries gets underway with a pair of sin gles Saturday. The doubles match follows Sunday with the concluding two singles on Mon day. Despite the outcome of the draw, tlie U.S. was an over whelming favorite to ckniiuate India and continue on to tlie challenge round against Aus tralia to be staged in Brisbane, Dec. 26-2H. However, do not underestimate the Mountaineers' abilitiy. The Owls can't afford to be compla cent when they play in La Grande, at Homecoming, and with hometown officiating. ' Tlie Eastern Oregon trip is proof that football isn't all glo ry and glamour. The Owls boarded a chartered bus last night at 10 o'clock. They rode all night and arrived in La Grande early today. Tonight Hie Owls rest, then tomorrow play the Mountaineers at 1:30 p.m. Immediately after the game they will board the bus and head south for home they arc expected to be here at 4 a.m. Sunday Monday they return to tlie classroom and practice field. OCE is the only obstacle be tween Portland State and the Vikings' first OCC crown. Port land State downed Southern Ore gon 'last week. Hie Viks need the "big" win over OCE to wear the crown. Looking ahead to Die '64 season it is nice to know tlie Vikings lost Bye-Byc White and quarterback Mike Schrunk by way of graduation. With these key losses and the return of OTI's young squad it will be safe to predict that un easy will be the head that wears tlie crown. Fewer Grid Deaths Recorded This Year LOS ANGELES (UPI I -Proper training and greater skill could lead to fewer foot ball deaths, Dr. Floyd R. East wood commented today with the release of his miclscason re port on gridiron fatalities which showed a drop of 26 per cent from last year. Dr. Eastwood's report as the chairman of the injury and fa tality committee of the Ameri can Football Coaches' Associa tion showed that I here were 11 deaths to dale directly attribut ed to participation in the sport. At the same time last year his report showed IB deaths di rectly related to football. T h e 11162 midseason report w a s 28 per cent below the total of the previous year. The November 1, 1S2, rcwt listed nine deaths indirectly caused bv football. Dr. Eastwood did not re lease a UHvl compilation of deaths indirectly resulting from football because his committee had not yet concluded its check ing of those fatalities. Slated to see state action for the Pelicans are Bob Scholl, Merkel Britt, Ralph Totton, Ter ry Metier, Gary Maw, Bob Rob bins and Dave Vaagen. Klamath Falls and Medford finished one-two in the district Post Bid Refused BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (UPI I -A federal district judge ruled Thursday that the Saturday Evening Post could receive a fair trial here in Alabama Coach Paul (Bear) Bryant's SlO-million libel suit. Judge H. Hohart Grooms said Curtis Publishing Co. did not present a "strong enough case of adverse publicity" for a rul ing that an unbiased jury could not be found in the slate. Bryant filed the suit on the basis of a Post article, "The Story of a College Football Fix" which said former Georgia Ath letic Director Wallace Butts gave him game secrets before the 11162 Alabama-Georgia game. Curtis, which publishes the Post, claimed that the trial should be moved outside the state. the final report in January to the Football Coaches Associa tion would list deaths both di rectly and indirectly attributed to football. Although there was one foot hall death in the pro ranks. Dr. Eastwood pointed out that the fatal injury of Slone Johnson of the Kansas City Chiefs was only the second in professional foot ball in 32 years he has been compiling tlie statistics. Dr. Eastwood advocated more stringent pre-scason physical ex aminations to reduce the num ber ol deaths indirectly due to participation in football. There won't be any of that inter-service cooperation the State Department likes to talk about nor will there be any joint expeditions against the enemy. Just a lot of good, rugged football, for which all sides will be amply rewarded. Al abama, ranked No. 4 and slill in strong contention in the Southeastern, will be at home to Mississippi State. Nebraska and Missouri, tied or the big eight lead, meet at Columbia, Mo., and defending titlist Oklahoma, ranked eighth, hopes to stay unbeaten in league play by beating Colora do.
