PORTLAND, Ore. (UPI) -President
Arch Kingsley of the
Portland baseball club la "not
very optimistic" about the Bea
vers' future.
The Kansas City Athletics
Wednesday canceled "with re

Portland's future in the PCL

"I don't know where we can

Owl Outlook
By Wanda Burleson
' By WANDA BURLESON
' Tlie young Owl grid squad has
found out the hard way that a
.game lasts four quarters not
two!
In the past two weeks the
Owls' second half "let
down" has cost them one game
and almost a second. Tlie Owl
first half effort is usually out
standing but the last two quar
ters they have lacked the en
thusiasm and alertness of their
earlier performances. Such was
tlie case when OCE exploded in
the second half last Saturday.
Tlie Wolves almost blemished
the Owl Homecoming. However,
it was an Owl defensive effort
that stopped the OCE crew
from upending the OTl crew in
.the final minutes of the game.
Consistent good play is the sure
key to success.
: There were moments last Sat
urday when it appeared the
OCE coaching staff would have
to "suit up." The injury-laden
Wolves made it obvious they
were in poor shape. Condition
ing has been the key to tlie
lack of injuries on the Owl
squad. The OTl coaching staff
has emphasized their condition
ing as tlie important factor in
their program. Tlie mam ideal

gram is that a boy who is in
peak physical sha Is less
prone to football injuries. A 1 1

more schools encouraged good
conditioning programs there
would be less gridiron injuries,

the La Grande turf. EOC has
long been thought of as the
"door mat" of the conference.
However, do not underestimate
the Mountaineers' abilitiy. The
Owls can't afford to be compla
cent when they play in La
Grande, at Homecoming, and
with hometown officiating.
' Tlie Eastern Oregon trip is
proof that football isn't all glo
ry and glamour. The Owls
boarded a chartered bus last
night at 10 o'clock. They rode
all night and arrived in La
Grande early today. Tonight Hie
Owls rest, then tomorrow play
the Mountaineers at 1:30 p.m.
Immediately after the game
they will board the bus and
head south for home they arc
expected to be here at 4 a.m.
Sunday Monday they return to
tlie classroom and practice field.
OCE is the only obstacle be
tween Portland State and the
Vikings' first OCC crown. Port
land State downed Southern Ore
gon 'last week. Hie Viks need
the "big" win over OCE to
wear the crown. Looking ahead
to Die '64 season it is nice to
know tlie Vikings lost Bye-Byc
White and quarterback Mike
Schrunk by way of graduation.
With these key losses and the
return of OTI's young squad it
will be safe to predict that un
easy will be the head that
wears tlie crown.
Fewer Grid Deaths

Judge H. Hohart Grooms said

Counting Big Games
By I'nited Press International
On the ground ... in the air
. . . over the water . . . you can
always count on the United
States Armed Forces for a gal
lant battle. And there'll be no
exception this weekend when
the three big service academ
ies stage their version of
tlie college football bowl.
There won't be any of that
inter-service cooperation the
State Department likes to talk
about nor will there be any
joint expeditions against the
enemy. Just a lot of good,
rugged football, for which all
sides will be amply rewarded.
The occasion is a couple of
grudge games pairing the Army
against the Air Force in Chi
cago and Navy against Notre
Dame at South Bend. The out
come is as important to these
teams as the result of a bowl
game is to other schools.
. Rivalry Continues
Army and the young Air
Force Academy have met
only once before and that re
sulted in a 13-13 tie three years
ago. The Navv-Notre Dame se
ries dates back to 1927 and is
the longest intersectional rival
ry in college football.

Dave Wilborn of Albany, runner-up
to Cox last year.
Teams figured to give the de
fending South Salem team its
strongest opposition are Grant,
South Eugene. North Eugene,
and Wilson. Grant was second
last year, with North Eugene
running fourth and Wilson fifth.
Grant recently won the Dis
trict 1-A-l title over Wilson,
however, Marshall's Terry Kish
baugh won individual honors in
this meet and is figured to sup-
vised are Mississippi vs. Louis
iana State and Southern Califor
nia vs. Washington.
It'll be hard to convince stu
dents at the service academies
and Notre Dame, but there'll be
a number of other contests
around the country Saturday of
particular importance.
Texas, ranked No. 1 in the
nation and one of only four ma
jor schools left with an unblem
ished record, travels to Dallas
with a meeting with Southern
Methodist. The Longhorns, de
spite their national prominence,
are still tied with Baylor for
the Southwest Conference lead
and must keep on winning to
earn a return trip to the Cotton
Bowl.
Big Ten Contests
The Big Ten also lists several
key conference clashes. Second,
ranked Illinois, in a three-way
tie for the league lead, hosts
Purdue, and sixth-ranked Wis
consin is at Michigan State, one
of the other leaders. Both Pur
due and Wisconsin are tied or
fourth place and could possibly
move to the lop by winning.
There won't be any lack of
excitement in the Southeastern
Conference where .third
ranked Mississippi, seventh
ranked Auburn and 12th-ranked
Louisiana State are deadlocked
at the top. Mississippi will be
at Baton Rouge to continue its
fierce rivalry with LSU while
Auburn hosts tough Florida. Al
abama, ranked No. 4 and slill
in strong contention in the
Southeastern, will be at home
to Mississippi State.
Nebraska and Missouri, tied
or the big eight lead, meet at
Columbia, Mo., and defending
titlist Oklahoma, ranked eighth,
hopes to stay unbeaten in
league play by beating Colora
do. The big game on the
West Coast matches ninth
ranked Southern California and
Washington, two of the leaders
in the Big Six and another big
one with no conference conno
tations pairs powerful eastern
independents Pittsburgh and
10th ranked Svracuse.
