Sometimes high cards may prove to be an embarrassment of riches. East looked at his fine hand and opened one diamond with every expectation of winding up with a nice profit. It came as quite a shock to find that his opponents were in a heart game before the bidding got back to him. East wanted to compete further, but decided that discre tion was the best strategy and passed. West opened the deuce of dia monds and East was in the lead with the king. He thought a while or at least paused because if he had really thought he might have come up with the winning defense. Finally he led his singleton trump. South won with the ace and played two more rounds of trumps. Then he led the ten of clubs and it was all over but the mopping up. South had to lose two club tricks, but that was all. Even-' tually he was able to discard two spades and a diamond on dummy's long clubs and to ruff his other diamond w ith dummy's last trump. Had East really thought before leading to trick two he could have defeated the contract. He would have seen the club dan ger and led a spade up to dum my's ace-queen. Then he would have been able to lead a second spade before the clubs were set up and would have made a spade trick. Where did the embarrassment of riches come in? Had East held queen-jack-ten of spades he would have had no trouble find ing the spade shift. The king was his undoing.
