Crown Colony Of British Guiana Proves To Be Headache For Both England and U.S. By PHIL NKWSOM i UPI Foreign Newi Analyst As Britain slop by slop has gone about tiie business ol dis mantling its empire and giving independence to former colo nies, among the most persistent of ils headaches has been the crown colony of British Guiana. Although on the way for more than 10 years, independence still is a goal to be realized by 'British Guiana which is situa ted on the north coast of South America and is about the size of Kansas. Now the British are making another try at setting a date. British Guiana has been de scribed as a small country with big problems, poor, racially di vided and isolated by moun tains and jungle. As well as being a problem to itself and to Britain, it also is a problem for the United Slates. At the center of the problem is Guiana's prime minister, Dr. Cheddi Jagan, an American trained dentist of East In dian descent, and ' his wi e Janet, who once called Chicago home and w ho doubles as min ister for home affairs with te sponsibility for internal secur ity. Jagan is an admitted Marxist and an admirer of the Soviet Union and Castro Cuba. Jagan Predicts Trouble In London, Jagan has been making dire predictions of sn "explosion" if British Guiana does not achieve its independ ence now. The country, he said, could be the signpost, whether the whole of ILatin America is to proceed through peaceful evolution or bloody revolt. Jagan derives his strength from the East Indians who make up nearly half of British Guiana's population, living mostly in rural areas and work ing on the big sugar planta tions. His chief opposition comes from the predominantly Negro Peoples National Congress led by Foibcs Burnham represent ing a voting bloc nearly as Shed Cost Reported NEW IPlNE CHEEK-Bill Al len reported on his assignment of rebuilding the grange wood shed at the regular East Side Grange meeting Saturday night. He said the repairs cost approx imately $60, not including a light which must be run out to the shed. A report on the Home Eco nomics meeting held Thursday altcrnnon, with Mrs. Hilda i.n kcit as hostess, was given by Mrs. Ethel Cundiff. The women set the dates for the Igrange sponsorcd pinochle parties which are open to the public. The first card parly of the series will be held Oct. Bfi, with the others dnled Nov. 23, Dec. 28, Jan. 25, 'Feb. 22, and March 2B, Refreshments will be served at each party and there will be prizes. A grand prize for both men and women will be award ed at the end of the six-party series. The next regular grange meet ing on Nov. 2 will be preceded by a "duck and floosc" feed beginning at 8.30 p.m. Club Eyes By-Laws The Klnmnlh Basin Belle Ewes attended a special meet ing Oct. 8, called by President Mrs. Jerry Ahem of Merrill. The group considered bylaws and announced the coming "Make It Yourself With Wool," judging and style show at the city library Saturday and Sun day, Oct. 26 27. The style show Sunday afternoon Is open to the public. Mrs. Blanche Hiilchett and Mrs. Florence McCartie w ill serve refreshments. Mis. Cuba shipped in oil and flour and the Soviet Union offered lone - term loans and cheap prices for fertilizers and agricultural machinery. Jagan a No offered landing rights to Cuban planes next door to both Venezuela and Brazil. The United States sees an in dependent Guiana under Jagan as another Cuba and its sus picions are confirmed by Jagan's own words. It has brought pressure upon Britain to see that such does not occur.
