PACE-M HERALD AND , ; I -Z l ' S ROYALTY ON THE FARM There couldn't be a potato festival without potatoes and since the annual Klamath Basin Potato Festival at Merrill marks the end of another growing season and celebrates the harvest, what more fitting place for the festival court to have a picture taken than in a potato field. Queen Nondice McFall of Bonanza is center front. With her, at left, is Princess Susan Russell, Tulolake, and right, Princess Dee Harris of Malin. Princesses in rear, left to right, are Carol Lee Haskins, Merrill; Micki Wolff, Chiloquin, and Cheryl Thurman of Henley. The girls are high school jun iors and seniors. Festival dates are Oct. 25-26 at Merrill. The queen will be crowned and the court will be introduced during tha banquet Friday evening in the grade school gymnasium. The dinner is scheduled for 7:30. Because the decorations are ragged and would require ex tensive mending, it w as decided to replace them with lighted Christmas trees placed at vari ous points around the town. The local women's clubs are backing a proposal for benches with planters in the downtown area. With assistance from the Mount Shasta Chamber of Com merce, an effort will soon be launched to secure some action on the idea. To publicize (he recreational facilities of Southern Siskiyou County, the chamber also plans to have printed 10.000 copies of a brochure adverti.-ing the area. These will be distributed at the sports show and fair slated Nov. H-17 at Berkeley. DEAR POLLY-1. too. save the pointers. Recently when I gave a shower for a bride-to-be, I passed out a Polly's Pointer clipping to each guest. Then each one read hor Pointer aloud. After the pots are strung on the cord, hang tint City To Get State Check For Airport State and local aviation offici als and pilots Friday will gath er at Kingsley Field for the pre sentation of a check to the City of Klamath Falls for the resurfacing of two runways at Kingslcy Field. The $19,840 check is from the State Board of Aeronautics, and covers the cost of materials for the job. Work was completed last month on the two runways. 5,165 and 5.261 feet long respectively. They were recovered with as phalt and a sealer was added. In addition, a shoulder was laid along each runway. City crews did the work. Complete cost of the job was $30,522.17, of which $19,840 will be paid by the state. The check presentation will take place during a noon lunch con Friday at the Satellite restaurant. A representative of the State Board of Aeronautics will present the check to Klam ath Falls Mayor Robert Veatch. 4-H NEWS ROCKEN 49KRS The Rockcn 49ers 4-H Club met at the home of Woodrow Chambers on Oct. 7, with the former president, Marc Olson, presiding. Highlighting the meeting was the election of new officers. Susie Ncwkirk was elected pres ident, with Mardita Jamison, vice president; Linda Olson, sec retary: Alida Jamison, treasur er: Ronnie Deshon, sergeant-at-arms, and Shirley P r u i 1 1, re porter. v A discussion was held on plans for the future achievement night, and the members were asked to consider a community project.
