Better Grades 8 Study In Spurts Take Notes And Review By The Reading Laboratory Written for Newspaper Enterprise Assn. The title of this article may be a little misleading. Nobody is real ly sure just how learning works. There's a whole host of plausible theories on the psychological mar ket but there are still large gaps in our knowledge. Wc do know enough about learning to figure out some productive study meth ods, and perhaps more important, we know something about forget ting, too. We know, for instance, that your learning is restricted by your span of concentration, and we know that the average span of concen tration for a student on a single subject is about 50 minutes. That's why your classes are usually 50 minutes long. On t h e other hand, if you can still re member something the day aftcri you learned it, you can be sure you won't forget it easily. This just scratches the surface of learning theory, but it's enough to help you plan your study time Here's the way you ought to studv to make the facts of learning work for you: Study in spurts. Study for about a half hour, then take a five-min-ute break. Really turn your mind on full power for each "study spurt." Get the most out of each spurt. Be ac tive, involved and thinking. Switch subjects. Spend two half hour periods on one subject then switch to another. It'll keep your mind fresh. Spend the first five minutes of each half-hour period reviewing the previous half-hour. Since the influx of new material speeds up forgetting, doesn't it follow that if you study for sev eral hours without reinforcement, you'll forget most of what you learned in the first hour? And if meaningful material is the eas iest to learn, isn't it pointless to memorize without trying to under stand what you're memorizing? inate a lot of forgetting. If you have to memorize something, understand it first. Take notes as you study just key words to help you remem ber. Your memory is tricky; don't trust it.
