During the war years George Rapce and Sam Stayman of New York developed a system of responding to opening no-trumps in which the two club response to the opening no-trump was an artificial forcing bid. Stayman's name was attached to the conven tion and today every expert in the world uses it in some forir or other. The uses diverge tremendous ly, but they all go under the gen eral name of Stayman so I will call mine Jacoby-Stayman. Of course Jacoby-Stayman fits per fectly with the Jacoby transfer bid, but whether or not you use the transfer bid you should use Jacoby-Stayman. , The bidding shown in the box would be that of any pair using any version of Stayman. The hand shows why all experts use the con vent ion. Without the artificial club North would probably respond three no trump and South would have no play for the contract. The diamond opening would establish three dia mond tricks and East and West would each collect a trick with an ace. The two club response is artifi cial and specifically asks t h e opening bidder to show a four card major suit if he has one. South has foul- spades and shows it whereupon North bids four spades. Garrison, assistant pro-' fessor of mechanical technology at Oregon Technical Institute, commands the educational divi sion of the United Fund this year. In that post, he and a staff of three other men solicit and col lect donations to the United Fund from some 850 employes of school systems within the county, plus OTI. It is his fourth year as a Unit ed Fund volunteer and the first as a division chairman. Garrison has been at OTI for nine years. He and his wife Alma have three children. One son, Ray Jr., lives and works in San Francisco. A daughter, Carolyn, is a missionary in Hong Kong, and another son, David, is with DuPont in Wilmington, Del. the doctor sAYslCommittee Head Claims Cleft Palate Cases Now Being Helped Employment Up In West SAN FRANCISCO UPI Em ployment in July in the 13 west ern states rose 2.5 per cent over July 1962, the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Western regional director Max D. Kossoris said the figure com pared favorably with the 2.0 per cent national increase. Washington was the only state that did not share in the expan sion. Aircraft jobs dropped by 1.1,500 over the year and the re cently settled lumber strike took another 10.000 jobs. Hawaii and Idaho rose 0.5 per cent while Nevada was the high est state with an 8.7 per cent in crease. The bureau also said that non farm employment rose 21,000 fmm mid-June to mid-July of this year, bringing the total to 9,182,- 500. In addition to Washington, Ha waii, Idaho and Nevada, the states covered in the report in clude Alaska, Arizona. California, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah and Wyoming. By W. G. BRANUSTADT. M.D, Newspaper Enterprise Assn. An 18-year-old girl writes that she was born with a cleft palate. which was corrected by operation when she was 6. Her problem now is that, although she can swallow normally, she has an unpleasant nasal voice. This is a common occurrence. Cleft palate is found in about one of every 750 babies, and is the result of a failure in the em bryo of the right and left halves of the palate to fuse. This may involve the soft palate alone, or both the hard and soft palates. Although in about 20 per cent of these babies there appears to be a hereditary factor, in the remain ing 80 per cent no cause is found. At Northwestern University in Chicago the Cleft Lip and Palate institute has been working on this problem for many years. They have found that, as with manv other medical problems, the best results are obtained with a team approach. In this case the team consists of a plastic surgeon, an orthodon tist identist who straightens the alignment of the teeth , prostho- donist (who makes dental and palatal plates I. pedodontist (who has special knowledge of children's dental problems , speech ther apist, and a nose and throat specialist. The results, although truly mi raculous, arc not- accomplished overnight. They may require ,10 years to achieve. Similar teams are now operating in many parts of the country. Ingeniously contrived speech ap pliances have been fitted to many of these victims who, like: my reader, . have had an operation which accomplished only part of me job. To be able to swallow is very important to a baby's develop ment, out me ability to talk nor mally is equally important for the development of the adult personal ly. All too often the inability to speak plainly is interpreted as a lack of intelligence. Nothing could be further from the truth when cleft palate is the cause. Plastic surgeons are now per fecting operations that can correct both the swallowing and the speech disorders, eliminating the need for an artifical palate. Even per sons whose deformity was neglect ed in childhood can be helped af ter they attain adulthood. It is, of course, better to cor rect cleft palates early in child hood. One 4-year-old child, after her palate had been repaired, was greatly helped to improve her speech through the efforts of a pa tient and understanding mother. This mother had her blow out candles and play games that in volved blowing a feather, as well as practice pronouncing difficult words properly. If your child has a cleft palate, this will be a handicap only if you let it be. . Q My 4-year-old granddaughter has asthma. Would her diet have anything to do with the severity of her attacks? If so, what kind of food should be kept from her? A Asthma has many causes, which include inhalants such as animal dandruff, pollens, house dust and, in some persons, foods Only by careful studies can the exact cause be determined. If the cause is an inhalant the diet will not influence it. If it is a food, she will have to avoid any preparation that con tains the offending ingredient. Protest Commie-Inspired WASHINGTON' (UPD Chair man bdwm E. Willis of the House Committee on Un-Ameri can Activities labeled as Communist dupes the bands of beatnik-style youths who battled police in a wild two-day protest against the committee hearings on students travel to Cuba. The committee's public hear ings came to an end Friday as more than loo police cleared at least 35 shouting youths from the house office building. Seventeen of the demonstrators were ush ered from the committee hearing room amid shouts of "Nazis" and 'police brutality." Fifteen youths had been ousted from the hearing Thursday in a similar wild melee. Terming the demonstration an 'ugly episode," Willis said it was Communist-inspired, but he add ed that the demonstrators them selves were not Communists. "The big boys who don't show up arc the Communists." he said. When the demonstrations erupt- ed Friday, police moved in quick ly. Six persons were arrested; five were members of the protest band, and one was a member of the so-called American Nazi party. Hie disturbance broke out when a throng of student sym pathizers, angered at being barred from the committee hear ing room, ignored police orders to move. Scuffling and shouting broke out. The police moved in, and drove the demonstrators down three flights of stairs to the side walk. Girst screnmed as they were carried out. There were shouts of 'This is (lie way the fascists oper ate, and "There s more democ racy in Cuba than in Washing ton. Willis promised further investi gations looking toward legislation to tighten laws governing travel. He said that the student trip to Cuba was a "clear violation of the law, and that the two days of hearing showed "the difficult and changing techniques of the Com munist conspiracy.
