Count on me to be a block chairman. Need iumeonc to solicit funds for a campaign to rehabilitate wayward icebergs? I'll ring a hundred doorbells before night. Here of late, however. I've lxx-n having some trouble finding worthy causes tliat I can identify with. The new crusades I've been asked to join all seem lacking in appeal. Take this scheme to add a pre fabricated breakfast to (He line of frozen TV dinners. Some ex perts are predicting that it will destroy the last remnants of Western civilization. Have (Mfsrlting Factors I agree that a TV breakfast will further weaken the fabric of our society, but there are off setting factors that deter me from enlisting in the campaign against it. I have found that the alumi num trays the meals come in arc just dandy for coloring Eas ter eggs. It is much the same with an appeal for help that 1 received from William L. Hopper, crusad ing assistant city editor of the Greenville (Ohiol Advocate. 'My lofty position enables me to spread my influence to quite a number of readers. Hopper wrote, "but there may be a few million readers outside my sphere." Cut Away In truth Therefore. ' he urged that I draw upon my experience as a crusader to help "cut away a viel of untruth" that is being draped across the nation in the daily press. 'This cancerous fiction that becomes more widespread each day is the way that 'the weather man is used m papers from coast to coast," Hopper explained. His crusade is directed al news stories which read: "The weath erman dumped seven inches of rain here last night before bring ing in 102-dcgree temperatures loday. For tonight and tomorrow, the weatherman will bring hail mixed wilh sleet, partly followed bv tornadoes." ' It is his contention that a weatherman c o u I d n't possibly cause such a 5 r u p t climatic changes. In the interest of scien tific accuracy, he says, such stor ies should read: "the weather- woman, etc." Although it pains me to turn down a colleague, I must regret fully reject tl Hopper crusade on grounds that it likewise is based on a fallacy" In order to be meteorologically correct, the stories would have lo read: "The weather commitce. etc." Granddad Hits 195 mnh In Cnr 1 W -aalt BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS, Utah (UPH A Van Nuys. Parents Should Encourage Child's Scientific Curiosity By DAVID NVDICK I IM Education Specialist Tlie licld of science is fascinat ing to children. They are curious about many evenls in their daily life and parents should encourage this attitude. A proper response to children's (luestions can be most helpful to encourage their curiosity. Science. for children, is a way of discover ing, new know ledge. They learn lo organize'facts and concepts so that they can undersiana me world around them. Tlie school program aims to develop skills in problem solving, a scientific attitude, and an ap preciation of and an interest in line world in which 'we live. It should develop practical Know ledge useful for all individuals. Encourage Talented Child it also is important lo encour age children with social talents and interests in science to pur sue learning in this important subject. At home parents can do many important' things for their chil dren. Be a good listener: show concen in his discussions and interests: supply needed equip ment and space; be available for special activities. Some good activities which may produce excellent science learning can be found right around the house. Such things as building a bud feeder, planting a garden, explaiaing the heating system, and examining the elec trical system are good possibili ties. Questions Form Basis Tljese activities, in themselves, will not develop scientific know ledge and skills. It is the plan ning and questions which help t0 bring about tlie valuable learn ing. An organized approach to each activity should involve ques tions, research, plans, and an evaluation of the results. These st tlie tilings which lead to a scientific attitude. There are hundreds of possible activities which arouse chil- drcn's curiosity. Allow them to follow these interests. Encourage llieir questions. Help them find and organize their answers.
