Carton of 40 ,99 West Makes Key Defense By OSWALD JACOBV ' Newspaper Enterprise Assn. I don't know the nameless bridge player who said, "I don't care who makes the nation's slams as long as 1 can make the nation's part scores." I have to agree with him. North should really have made a diamond overcall instead of the takeout double in which ca.se South would have raised dia monds. Three diamonds makes easily and so should two spades, but South timed his play rather poorly and line defense set him. He won the first trick with dummy's ace of clubs and led a low spade to his king. West won with the ace and jllaycd two clubs. South ruffed the second club, led tt diamond to dummy's ace, came bark to his hand with the king of diamonds, and led a heart. Dummy's nine forced East's ace and East threw dum- " my in with the queen of trumps. ' A diamond lead from dummy gave East a chance to get rid of one of his hearts and then came the queen of hearts! South was in dummy with the king and couldn't get to his own hand. He led a diamond, but East rutted with the nine spot and West got rid of his last heart so declarer was held to just one ; heart trick. Adding this to three trumps, two diamonds and a club only Rave South a total o( seven, Where did declarer go wrong? He needed two heart tricks and should have attacked hearts he fore he got involved with the dia mond 6Utf. . . . , You'll learn how to make part scores consistently, with a 'copy of "Win at Bridge Willi Oswald Jacoby. .lust send your name, address, and SO cents to: Os- wald Jacoby Reader Service, care this newspaper, P.O. Answer Tomorrow Labor Total Stationary SALEM The total number of persons working in Oregon changed little (rom mid-June to mid-July. David 11. Cameron commissioner of tlie Department of Employment, announced. Only 300 (ewer workers had jobs in July, for a total of 732.800. Tile changes within different indus tries, however, were large. A loss of 7,400 Jobs in state and local government resulted from the June closure of educa tional institutions, and the tim ing of crops caused an addition al 1,400 employe decline in can ning ano preserving although ag ricultural workers increased 4.5011. tuner excellent gains came in contract construction of 1,700 and trade 1.8O0. It was the highest level of em ploymcnt for any July despite the lumber Industry labor dispute. An estimated 9.0110 workers were involved at mid-July, about the same as in June. The additional plants closed In July came at a time later than the rclerence point for these estimates. The lumber industry had 7,400 fewer employed than a year earlier. The big job gain came in non manufacturing where 22,300 new jobs have oxned up since last .inly, umtraet construction up 7.800, trade up 3,800, service up 3,200, and government up 5.5(10 made the most sizable advances. Agricultural employment was down almost 11.000 from last July. The big difference was in the strawberry harvest which this July was almost completed by midmonlh.
