Klamath Falli, Oregon Thursday, August . 19(3 PAGE 1-B Big Weight Community tfiztmclaJi Lifters Free Family Trio COLOGNE, Germany iLTI' - Six hulking West German weight lifters smuggled an East German wrestling champion, his wife and son across the Iron Curtain in a tiny bus. it was learned Wednes day. The weightlifters told a news conference they crammed the Olympic wrestler and his family inside a secret compartment they fashioned in a Volkswagen bus they drove across the border. They picked up Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kaemmerer and their 7-year-old son at the East German city of Leipzig and drove them west Sunday. The wcightliftcrs aid they thought the Communists had caught them at the border. At the border. Communist guards stopped the bus for 30 minutes. The guards began a thorough check of the bus in which the wcightliftcrs sat, mus cled shoulder next to muscled shoulder. Kaemmerer, his wife and child caught their breath often in the half hour the guards poked around, under and in the bus. Finally, the guards permitted them to go. Kaemmerer has 10 times won East German wrestling titles. Twice he represented the coun try in the Olympics. Hans Muellcwitz, one of the weightlifters, said they planned the operation for "a long time." For the past two years the weight lifters had been talking to Kaem merer who complained of life in the East. They chose the just ended Leipzig summer sports fes tival for the time. The festival gave the West Ger man weightlifters a good excuse to drive their bus into East Ger many. After a token appearance at the festival, they picked up the Kaemmerers and made the 150-mile drive to the West Ger man border. Debt: House leaders called up for debate Wednesday a bill to ex tend the record high legal ceiling for the national debt. The debt ceiling now stands at $.109 billion. Under terms of the proposed bill it would be extended for three addi tional months until Nov. 30. Taxes: The House Ways & Means Committee today began work on the final items of the administration's tax program that it must act on before getting down to work on the proposed tax cut. The committee went into Us sixth day of work on the program with only a handful left of the structural changes in the tax law recommended by President Ken nedy.
