Newspaper Page TextAerial Spraying Program Kills Sage, Rabbit Brush FORT nOCK-Wilting of sage brush and rabbit brush at sev eral Fort Rock and Silver Lake ranches assures a good kill alter aerial spraying. The spray pro gram, with ranchers pooling acreages to secure a better price offer, was arranged through the Lake County Extension Service. Bill Moser was In charge. Done in early June when brush is growing rapidly, this type of range improvement is on the in crease. U does away with the wind erosion problem which ac companies plowing of brush. . Sites are selected which have a heavy growth of brush, indicating better soil. After spraying, native grasses can use the m o i s t u r e which had previously gone to the brush. Some ranchers will then do fall seeding of crested wheat or tall wheat grasses. Ranchers who took part in this year's spray program were Rich- lard Morehouse, Maurice Ward anil Bud Parks, Fort Rock, and Dud ley Long and Jess Peninslon. Sil ver Lake. Each rancher provided flagmen to insure spraying of the right location. Paul Orlwein of Lakeview pro vided the equipment, with Merle Williams of Bellingham, Wash., piloting the Callair spray craft. Merle Williams of Bellingham, Wash., pilots the Callair spray craft shown above. Navy Man Found Guilty Of Espionage NEW YORK lUPIi - Navy Yeoman 1C. Nelson C. Drummond was found guilty Friday night in1 his second espionage trial of crim inally conspiring to pass military documents to the Soviet Union. His conviction by the federal court jury of 10 men and two wom en may bring a maximum pen alty of death. Judge Thomas F. Murphy scheduled sentencing for Aug. 10. However, the panel failed toi agree alter almost 12 hours ol deliberations on a second charge brought against the 34-ycar-old sailor. Murphy planned to hear motions on the charge July 30. That count charged Drummond with the specific overt act of at tempting to give six naval docu ments to two members of the So viet United Nations delegation last Sept. 28 outside a diner in Larch mont, N.Y. where FBI agentsi arrested him. The defendant's first trial ended in a hung jury on May 23. Under cross-examination in thcl latest trial, Drummond estimated! that he was paid between $20,000' and $24,000 by Russian agents since he began working for them in 1057 or 1958 while stationed in London. He also admitted making 32 trips from the Newport, R.I., nav al base to New York to deliver various documents, which he claimed were declassified and thus of no value to an enemy. Asst. U.S. Atty. Vincent Broder- ic-k charged the information he gave the Russian spies was classi fied, or secret, and included de tails of electronic equipment on u.s. snips mat would be ex tremely helpful" to the Soviets. Broderick said it was too early' to say what action the government would take on the second count. He said he considered it "most unusual" that the jury was per mitted to make a verdict on the basis of only one of the two charges against Drummond. Nelson Gets Park Award Marvin L. Nelson, administra tive officer for Crater Lake Na tional Park, received a superior performance award, Superintend ent W. Ward Yeager announced. The award recognized Nelson's outstanding performance rating and his work performance, both in general and during (lie period April 1962 through March 1!W3 in particular. During that time, he performed additional duties cre ated by stuff vacancies and by unprecedented park operations in a manner above and beyond any normal expectation of his job's requirements. The award was read and pre sented to Nelson by Superintend ent Yeager during staff meeting. It was approved by the National Park Service's Western Regional Office in San Francisco, and the award includes a check tor $250 Nelson came to Crater Lake National Park in June, 1953, from tlie service's Midwest Regional Of fice in Omaha, Nob. Starting with the service as a CCC cnrollec in Grand Canyon National Park in 1934, he has served for 29 years with the United States Depart ment of the Interior. Twenty two of these years have been with the National Park Service in var ious areas and in several capacities. WRONG SPELLING TUCSON, Ariz. Continental Airlines began serving Tucson a year ago and residents of the area were happy except for one thing. Baggage checks had the city's name incorrectly spelled as Tuseon. Horse Association Files Court Charge ALTURAS Contempt of court proceedings are now pending against (lie American Quarter Horse Association, Amarillo. Tex., over a court decision made by Superior Court Judge M. G. Del Mutolo on June 28 in San Jose, Calif. The judge ordered Uie Amer ican Quarter Horse Association, the Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Association, and the California State Horsemen's Association to ease interference with the Mod el Quarter Horse Association in scheduling of two events at a recent San Jose horse show. In granting the injunction. Judge Del Mutolo agreed with the Model Quarter Horse Associ ation in its contention that the AQUA and other parties named had induced a breach of contract between the MQ1H and the San Jose horse show committee by acts of a threatening nature. In the complaint, the Model Quarter Horse Association has QUEEN CANCELED VISIT LONDON lUPIl-Queen Eliza beth canceled her visit to the Royal school in Windsor Great Park Sunday because of an out break of chicken pox among the pupils. The Mode Quarter Horse was accepted this year by the USDA as a recognized breed in its official registry. PRODUCTION IS UP LEXINGTON. Ky - Corn pro duction in Kentucky has increased from 25 to 46 bushels per acre during tlie last 100 years. Wheat production jumped from 10 to 24.4 bushels per acre during the century.
