Deer, Food Balance Required By DAN L. EASTMAN Game Biologist The proper balance between deer numbers and the available food supply on the critical winter ing ranges is the elusive goal continuously pursued in sound game management. Neither condition, animal num bers, nor food supply is static, and various types of studies are systematically carried on to meas-' ure tlicse changes and regulate harvest accordingly. A range de clining in the quality and quanti ty of game browse, if allowed to continue deteriorating, will gradually support fewer animal numbers. If excessive animals are per mitted to go unchecked, the de clining condition will be accele rated by the impact of these ani mals on the food supply. It there fore is essential that systematic range investigations be a func tion of the game biologist. Range investigations take many forms from gross examination, to annual production and utilization studies to long range condition and trend sampling. It is this latter technique which is being continuously expanded in Klam ath County and throughout the state. The range condition and trend transect is a cluster of line samples or transects through a typical segment of range which is permanently marked and staked for future reference and re-reading. A typical cluster will have three one-hundred foot transects between steel stakes permanently imbedded in the ground. At every one foot interval along steel tape stretched to the stakes, a record is made of the perennial plant, grass or shrub, to reveal the density and com position of the perennial stand. Photo points are established and a picture record ot tne site is maintained. Normally at five year intervals, the exact procedure at the identical site is repeated to . show the changes occurring in that parcel of range. The results of a continuous sur- ;vcy of this type reveals a great many things which can be boiled down into a range which is im proving, declining or static. Under excessive continuous use by for aging animals, perennial grasses and preferred browse will become I less abundant and undesirable plants such as rabbllbrush may increase. t Erosive conditions associated I with a deteriorating range begin appearing and the annual grasses I may invade more area. When the condition is widespread and the cause is pinpointed, which is generally not too difficult, correc tive action can be initiated based on the scientific results of this type of investigation. Condition and trend transects have been established in the Po kegama blacktail range of the Kcno unit this summer. This is the last of the five major wintering areas in the county to be incor porated into this systematic range evaluation technique which was developed by the U.S. Forest Scrv- ice.
