If you can restrain vour rni-in sity and not look at the East and west hands you can learn a val uable lesson in dummy play. East wins the first trick with the ace of clubs and returns the suit. ou win the trick and are now ready to apply the code word, "Arch." You don't worry about A (analyze the lead and "It" (review the biddino) bul you do count vour winnprs and get to eight easily, since you have two hearts, four dia monds and two clubs. Now you try "H and ask yourself, "How can I make a ninth trick?" You have two good places to try. If West holds both the ace and queen of spades or if you can guess which of the two high spades he holds you can make your ninth trick in that suit. How about the hearts? You don't know, but you can cash dummy's ace and king of hearts and see what happens You do this and when the ten drops you have your ninth trick for the taking. You simply play a third heart and set up a heart trick. Of course, a duplicate player might decide to go for a top and start proceedings by leading a spade toward dummy and going up with the king in the likely event that West played 1 o w. This would give him 10 tricks the way the cards he, but would cost him his contract if East held the ace of spades. Neb. il!PI A full reserve Navy task force will be assembled in the South Pacific 'on August 1. the Naval Reserve Training Command has announced here. Thirteen destroyer-type ships, under the over all command of Capt. George B. Hamilton, will steam out from West Coast ports for a rendezvous at sea en route to Hawaii. The ships will be manned by the Naval reserve's anti-submarine warfare reserve crews in the Pacific and will re turn to the West' Coast on August 18. Monday, July JS. 19M HERALD AND NEWS, Klamath Falls, Oregon LITTLE PEOPLE'S PUZZLE WASHINGTON d'PH - Senate investigators said Navy Secreta ry Fred Korth would be ques tioned in detail this week about cost data concerning the TFX fighter plane at the marathon hearings into the disputed con tract award for the supersonic: crau. The tall Navy civilian chief, a Texas banker from Fort Worth before coming to the Pentagon, is scheduled to face his fifth day of closed-door interrogation when hearings resume -Monday after noon. There was every indication the prolonged and often stormy in quiry by the Senate Permanent Investigations Subcommittee into the multi-billion dollar contract would drag on into August. Some of tlie sharpest verbal exchanges in the five-month-old investigation occurred during the past week. Subcommitte Chair man John L. UcCTellan, D-Ark, accused Korth of distorting the record, and Sen. Karl E. Mundt.j R-S.D., said there were some "great conflicts" between Korth's testimony and that of previous! military experts. The subcommittee is challeng ing the decision of last Novenv ber by Pentagon civilian officials to give the huge contract to Gen eral Dynamics Corporation de spile military preferences for a rival proposal by the Boeing Co the stakes are enormous. The total contract for 1,700 superonic fighters for use by both the Navy and the Air Force is expected to exceed $6.5 billion one of the largest military procurement awards in history. Political observers say the Ken nedy Administration, facing f presidential election in 196, can't afford a finding of mismanage ment or political favoritism to mar one of its Cabinet depart ments. In turn the subcommit tee feels it is not getting the whole story and that its reputa tion for fairness has been questioned. When hearings resume, cost data one of the major issues in the case will be re-explored. According to earlier testimony Boeing offered to build the changeable wing bi-service war plane for up to $440 million less than General Dynamics. Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara, backed by Korth and Air Force Secretary Eugene Zuckert, said Boeing presented a more risky design and that Gen eral Dynamics' cost figures were more realistic. In the first four days of ques tioning of Korth, the subcommitte dealt extensively with technical design features, such as Boeing's liberal use of the light-weight metal titanium, and Boeing's use of thrust reversers to brake the plane in flight. Roy Roberts of Rogue River found the body while fishing in the reservoir about 12 miles cast of Ashland. The body of the unidentified boy, who was about two years old, was wrapped in a blanket and quilt and was bound with wire. He lives in Portland with his daughter, Mrs. Leona Pierce. Until about a year ago he made his home in Dallas, Tex. "We had to get him up here so I could take care of him," Mrs. Pierce said. "You know how men are. They batch and they don't eat right. He needs some one to see that he eats right." Rusher agreed. "I've put on 90 pounds since I've been here," he said. Typical Air Force writing leans heavily to the use of unexplained abbreviations, but Calkins said Air Force manual 10-4 reads, "the space saved bv using abbrevia tions does not begin to compen sate for the loss of clarity that may result ..." Needed An Aid Calkins said he knows of one Boeing employe who collected source material to help cope wilh the abbreviation problem, includ ing a sheet entitled "AF (Air Force) abbreviations used on the Bomare program." It is this kind of non-writing that pushes the cost of corres pondence up to $20 a memo," Calkins said. He keeps battling away at the use of four-bit words and "cir cumlocution," which he defines as "saying nothing in 25 addition al words or more."
