agers and modern jazz buffs
should have no trouble finding
what they want on records this
summer.
Roulette has issued 12 LP's of
"Golden Goodies" which play back
tunes that have become hits. Each
tune is the original as performed
by the artist who made it popu
lar. Jazz lovers should especially
welcome "Norman Granz Presents
'Jazz at the Philharmonic' in
Europe." This is a four LP series
issued on M-G-M's Verve label and
records the jazz wizardy of such
giants as Coleman Hawkins, Roy

World in 80 Days" at the outdoor
Marine Theater at Jones Beach
turned out just fine, and don't
miss it if you reach tliese parts
this summer or next.
Spectacular, of course, is the
word for Guy Lombardo'a pro
duction of the musical conceived
by Michael Todd Jr., based on
the celebrated film his late father
made with a bow to Jules Verne's
novel.
The gigantic production whips
along at good speed on the thea
ter's two immense stage areas

the amphitheater from the island
where the main sets ate housed
June Taylor, who also de
vised the many dances, did a
wonderful job, abetted by the
endless inventiveness and skill of
set designer George Jenkins.
Most of the highspots of London
clubman Phileas Fogg's 1872 trip
around the world have been
worked into the show by libret
tist Sid Hcrzig and songwriters
Sammy Fain and Harold
Adamson. The score is lively and
tuneful.
Among the more spectacular
effects are the balloon tliat helps
speed Fogg and valet Passepar
tout on their way. the rescue of
an Indian princess from a jungle
suttee, an escape on an elephant.
wild doings in a saloon on San
Francisco's Barbery Coast, an
American Indian attack on a
train, the burning of the super
structure of the S. S. Henrietta
to supply fuel for her boilers.
The show plays nightly weath
er permitting until Labor Day.
It will be repeated next summer.

NEW 'MET' Approval of plans for the interior of the Metropolitan Opera, Com
pany, being constructed at Lincoln Center for the performing arts, has been announ
ced. The new house will retain essentially the horseshoe shape of the old theater.
The new "Met" will seat 3.765 compared with 3,625 in the old. The new building will

And the nudie generally is a
glamour girl Jayne Mansfield,
Lana Turner, Ava Gardner, Liz
Taylor and the like.
Rarely, if ever, does a dedicat
ed actor studio-type ever take
the plunge. You know, it's be
neath their dignity and like that.
But Carroll Baker, the girl who
stunned movie goers as a thumb
sucking nymphet in "Baby Doll,"
will have audiences in a dither
once again. She not only disrobes
entirely for the latest picture, she
doesn't even have a tub nf water
to hide in.
No Cover-Up
Actors studio graduate Baker is
true to her method acting back
ground, too. She wore no flesh-
colored leotard nor any of the!
other clever little cover-ups fa
vored by other actresses suppos
edly appearing in the nude.
For her opening scene in "The
Carpetbaggers" Carroll appeared
absolutely stark, bare, altogether
naked.
"I fell a little embarrassed,"
Carroll confessed with just the
trace of a blush blooming on her
pretty (ace. "But I concentrated
as much as I could on the scene

tained a skeleton crew, including

shoot the scene.
"My makeup woman and ward
robe woman were there, too,"
Carroll said. For some reason
I wanted other females around.:
"I held a robe around me as
long as possible. Then they were
ready to go and I had to let It
drop. The whole thing took about
a half hour as they shot the
scene with me sitting in front of
a dressing mirror in four takes.
"They wanted four different
camera angles just to be on the
safe side, to sec that not too
much of me showed."
Carroll was pleased that there
were no jokes from the crew, no
giggles nor other untoward be
havior.
"Everyone was very profession
al about it." she said.
"But I didn't go to see the
rushes the next day. I was too
self-conscious about seeing my
self naked on the screen. Really
I didn't have a stitch on except
for my suppers.

of Schumann's genius - works for
the piano Arturo Rubinstein brings
the mellowed depths of his inter
pretative art. The two are "Car
naval" and "Fantasiestuecke."
You're not likely to hear them
more effectively played from a
listener's viewpoint (RCA Victor
26691. Rubinstein is at the enviable ca
reer stage where he no longer
has to be concerned with achiev
ing technical perfection. No one
challenges his mastery and be can
address himself solely to the emo
tional contents of the music he
plays. This he does, with emotion
al reservations which can be justi
fied as "taste" and which give
renewed youth to old romanti
cism. In the second of his new series
of recordings Vladimir Horowitz
also takes on Schumann the
"Scenes from Childhood." On the
same record he plays three of
Scarlatti s sonatas, an impromptu
of Schubert's and three pieces by
Scriabin. The idea was to record
a recital and the record is called
The Sound of Horowitz" (Co
lumbia-Mil.)
Horowitz sounds deeply con
cerned with achieving technical
perfection, of the kind he had
years ago at the height of his
career, lie still has it, although
these pieces are not the kind for
a full display. But the striving for
it gets in the way of realizing
emotional potentials. Formalisms
are no substitute for sentiment.
"List Plays Liszt" is the title
of another piano recording. The
Liszt with the "z" in it needs no
identification and the List without
the "z" is the still youngish vir
tuoso, Eugene List. He plays
Liszt's 1st concerto with the Vien
na State Opera Orchestra, "Male
diction" and a Hungarian Rhap
sody tWestminstcr-17025.)
The Malediction is novel be
cause it is so rarely played but
when you've heard it you'll un
derstand why it has achieved ob
scurity. The rhapody is not one of
the famous ones for piano alone
but a youthful one Liszt put to
gether for piano and violin. It is
performed here in a version in
which tine piano part is arranged
into an orchestration. The violinist
is List's wife, Carroll Glenn who,
like her husband, gets full value
from a novelty.
