Falcons Edge lend Legionnaires In Non-League Contest, By JERRY WAGGONER llprald and Newt Sporti Editor The Klamath Falls Falcons rallied in the bottom of the ninth (or an unearned run to edge a scrappy Bend Legion team in a non-contercnce game at Gem Stadium, 6-5, after a 51 lead. It was a sloppily played game, but one with its thrilling moments. There were 13 errors committed in the game with the Falcons miscuing eight of those 13 times. Neither team deserved the victory. The Falcons will be in North Salem Saturday for a twin-bill . and will journey to Ashland Sunday for a crucial Southern Division contest. The Falcons have two league games remain ing and have a game and a half lead over the Medford team which they play Tuesday in the game for all the marbles at .Medford. Gary Benson went the route for the Falcons although he was wild as a March w ind at times. But he also had little backing as the Falcons gave Bend only two earned runs. And it was Benson himself who won the game. He did K by himself, virtual- ly, when he tripled to deepest centerfield with one out. The infield moved in extremely tight on LeVoy Young, the switch hilling shortstop batting I e f t -handed. The first baseman was within killing distance and Young almost doubled him up with a line shot off his bat but tlie first sacker made the catch, lie tossed back to third trying to get Benson doubled off but threw wild and Ken-von raced home with the winning run. It was a very sloppy game with a few highlights such as the tremendous home run belted by riglitfielder Dave Johnson of the Falcons. He blasted the homer over deepest left center field with Mike Kitchir. ' aboard in the five-run second frame. Bend jumped olf to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Mike Clark led olf the game with a Texas League tingle to center. Ben Hamilton's line drive through the box was knocked down by second sacker Lanny Guyer and he pitched to Young covering second for the out. Jerry Wel le walked as did catcher Val I-ewis to load the bags. Don Watrous drove a grounder to John Gray at first who relajed to catcher Jay Paxton for the force cut at home. Cris Kirby's hit ball was errored on and Welle scored. Then the Falcons came back with five runs in the second inning. Mike Kitching led olf with a single to right center and Paxton whiffed. Kitching had taken second on an error and stolen third before Johnson laid into the home run. Guyer struck out for the sec ond out but John Gray singled. Benson executed a perfect hit- and-run play with a single right past the first sacker and Gray went to third. Young was safe on the first sacker's error u hit h scored Gray. Larry Binney lined a single to left to chase Benson home. Binney took sec ond on the throw into home plate and a ptay was made back on him. The second sack er let the ball get away and Young scored. Binney tried for third on the miscue but was tossed out. There was no more scoring for the Falcons until the ninth when they won the game al though they had many oppor tunities to tally but didn't. Bend finally took advantage of the Falcons' errors and Ben son's wildness to putt into a tie. They tallied tw ice in the sixth. Watrous tripled over Kitch iiig's head into center and scored when Benson threw the ball away trying to pick him off. George Woodworth walked, took second on an infield out. third on a wild pitch and scored when Binney lost a fly ball in the lights and dropped the ball. The tvin2 runs came in the seventh of the regularly sched uled nine inning game. Wetle led off with a single and Lewis walked. Watrous lined a single to left field which scored Wel le. Binney's throw was to third base to cut off tlie runner Lew is advancing. But there was no one on the bag to receive the ball and it went to the Bend dugout, allowing Lewis to score the tying run. Watrous took third on the play and almost scored when a ball got away from Paxton. Houk apparently not only stirred up the hottest controver sy of the 13 All-Star game but also lit a fire under the big first baseman. In any event, Stuart returned from the two-day vacation result ing from the snub with a pair of homers and five runs batted an that paced the Red Sox to a 7-4, 10-inning victory over the Minne sota Twins Wednesday night. Stu art's second homer was a three run, luth-inning wallop that end ed Minnesota relief ace Bill Dai ley's 6tring of 24 consecutive scoreless innings. Stuart's first homer in the fourth inning was his first round tripper since June 20, and the two runs he knocked in were the first for him since June 28. The two homers and five runs batted in for the night increased his season totals in those departments to 19 and 55. Mar ty Keough's two-run triple in the first inning was the big blow for the Reds against Glen Hobbie. The victory was only Jay's fourth. Relief star Hal Woodeshick struck out Smoky Burgess with the bases filled in tlie eighth in ning to preserve the Colt victory for Ken Johnson.
