'Mended Heart Club' In Pakistan Is One Of Most Unique Throughout The World KARACHI HP! '-More than 401 Pakistanis recently became mem bers of one of the most usual heart clubs in the world1 when a six-member team of American heart specialists fin ished a mission in Pakistan. Official membership cards and pins of the "Mended Heart Club." were distributed by Dr. Joan Cop- pin. Hollywood, Calif., to 44 Pa kistanis who successfully under went open heart surgery to cor rect defects that would otherwise have shortened or restricted their lives. Dr. CopRin was t h e cardial- nfiist on the team from Loma Linda University and White Me morial Hospital in Los Angeles, Calif. The team was led by I)r Ellsworth K. Wareham 2201 Hill Drivel Los Anpeles, who is asso ciale professor of surgery at Loma Linda University. Dr. Coggin purchased the pins which arc red hearts with a gold scar across them, at her own ex pense before leaving the United States on the month-long mission. First to receive a pin was Af than Zafar, three-year-old daugh ter of Z. A. K. Zafar of Karachi, whose open heart operation at While Memorial Hospital last Oc tober spotlighted the need for lieart surgery in Pakistan. Out of 45 patients who were iperated on there was only one fatality, a low percentage for such a delicate operation, according to medical officials here. "It all happened due to the fine kill of the team, good luck and the grace of God." Dr. Habib Patel, president of the All Paki stan .Medical Association, said while introducing team members at a public meeting at the U.S. Information Centre here. Dr. Wareham praised civic or ganizations and local hospitals who helped make the mission a success. In a farewell address read at the meeting, parents of the pa tients said "we (eel that yours has been the most successful goodwill mission which ever came from across the seas." "While we pray for the recov ery of all your heart patients, we also pray for your long and hap py life to enable you to continue this noble work for the benefit of ailing humanity," the message said. (UPII W:hen radioactive materials are shipped Irom place to place in the nation, a lone duty officer in the Atomic Energy Commission's Albuquerque Operations office is the American public's guardian angel. Dickason, director of the AEC's storage division at Al buquerque, has transportation re sponsibility for all the nation's Swim Pool Assured MOUNT SHASTA A swimming pool is assured for Mount Shas ta with the additional gift of $1,000 from Mrs. Harrv L. Ben ton of La Jolla, which brings the cash balance for the Harry L. Benton Memorial Swimming Pool up to $7,600, according to George Thcbolt, chairman of the swim ming pool commission. In addition to the $7,600, the commission has the equipment for the filter system and other equipment which makes the total assets about $20,000. The commission plans to build the pool so it will be available for use next summer. It will be located on Siskiyou Union High School district ground, behind -Mount Shasta High School, and w ill be a 25 meter pool. Members of the swimming pool commission are appointed, two by the high school district board and three by the city council. Mem bers besides Thebolt are James Herbert of McCloud, Donald Rat ley, Larry Wisner and I. W. Kel-soe. classified radioactive material and all "hazardous material." Because of ad vance route planning, the man on duty can locate every bit of mov ing radioactive material geo graphically at any given time. According to Dickason. there never has been an accidental nu clear explosion. He said theAtom ic Energy Commission has never had an accident of any sort which resulted in danger to the public. When a vehicle carrying radio active material is involved in an accident, a team of experts rushed to the scene. When t h e storage division is notified there has been an accident, it is decid ed which emergency team will take charge to protect the public from contamination.
