He played the guitar "by ear, which probably sounded bet ter ihan if he had used his hands He could sing all 102 verses of "Lonesome Freight Train" and insisted on doing so. In some states, this was recognized as grounds for divorce. Almost every community had e folk singer, along vith a town drunk and a village idiot. In many communities, all three of them were the same fellow. Folk singers performed mainly in talent shows staged in the high school gymnasium to raise money for the volunteer fire department. Got Little Reward They were not paid for Uiesc appearances, but as a reward for their services thev were allowed . Which are real sincere. , As much as any group, and more than most, the Kingston Trio is responsible for the folk music transformation. Having been to gether for five years now, the Kingstons are regarded as the el der statesmen of the new breed. Target Of Purists This makes them a prime tar get of tt") traditionalists, as I found out m the course of a talk with the Kingstons, who arc ap pearing here this week. "Everybody Is a self-appointed folk mubic expert nowadays." said guitarist Nick Reynolds. "Right now it's very 'in' to put us down as prostitutes of folk music." "If we so much as add an E-minor to 'Dear Betsy.' they picket our next conceit." said guitarist Bob Shane. "With some of them folk music is almost like a religion." said guitarist t.lohn Stewart. "If they served communion at concerts, half of the audience would be up at the rail." The mention of religion started a discussion of the rising popular ity of gospel singers on the nieht club circuit. A bartonder told me that peo ple drink more during gospel songs than at any other time," said Frank Werber, the trio man ager. "Almost any day now I ex pect to see some cabaret change its name to the 'First Baptist Saloon'." MOUNT SHASTA July IB is the day set for tlie blood draw ing depot at Mount Shasta Com munity Hospital. The second Tues day of the month is the usual day for the blood bank, but it has been advanced one week this month. Hours are from 2:30 to 0:30 pm., and appointments may be made by calling Walnut (M515. The age limit is 18 to 60 and mini mum weight is 110 pounds. Minors must have signed permission. According to William Kmilh. administrator of the Mount Shasta Community Hospital, blood is needed to build the reserve at the local hospital. The Southern Siskiyou Reserve serves the com munities of McClnud, Dunsmuir, Mount Shasta, Weed, Castella, and surrounding areas. Lions Install New Officers MOUNT SHASTA - The Lions Club of Mount Shasta installed its officers for the coming year at a ladies' night dinner at the home of James P. Ilennessy Jr., last weekend. Henry Schroeder of the Duns muir Lions Club, zone chairman installed the following officers: I. W. Kclsoe, president; Robert Cornwall, secretary: Dick Bel land, treasurer; Thomas Flana gan, first vice president ; John Babb, second vice president; Wil liam Dillingno. third vice presi dent; Phillip Smith, Lion tamer. and Fred Peterson, tail twister.
