UPI Telephoto Near No-Hit Contests Spice American By MILTON R1C1LMAN UPI Sports Writer Al Downing and Dava More- head can console each other today over coming so near, yet so far, in their bids lor no-hitters. Downing, the 22-yoar-old New York Yankees' southpaw, held the Chicago White Sox hitlcss for 6 2-3 innings Tuesday night but had to settle for a one-hit 3-0 victory. And Morehcad, a 19-year-old rookie right-hander for the Boston Red Sox, had a no-hlttor going until the eighth against the Cleve land Indians only to wind up with a two-hit 6-1 triumph. I would have liked to pitch a no-hitter," said Downing, "but I am not complaining a bit. Win ning the game was more impor tant." Morehcad was equally philo sophical. I did my best, lie said, and I'll take a two-hitler any d.y of the week." There .wasn't the least bit of doubt about Carreon's hit, which skipped over second base and rolled Into center field. But that was the only one of 134 pitches by Downing which was hit safely. He struck out 10 batters, walked six and got the only run he need ed when Tony Kubek singled home Hector Lopez in the third in ning. Lopez then hit a two-run homer In the fifth. The Yanks' run in tlie third was their first off loser Ray Bcrbert (8-5) in 20 consecutive innings. Morehcad, whose record now is 5-5. pitched perfect ball until he walked Willie Kirkland with two out in the seventh.
