Al Downing and Dava More-

Downing, the 22-yoar-old New

the Chicago White Sox hitlcss

but had to settle for a one-hit 3-0
victory.
And Morehcad, a 19-year-old
rookie right-hander for the Boston

until the eighth against the Cleve
land Indians only to wind up
with a two-hit 6-1 triumph.
I would have liked to pitch a

Morehcad was equally philo

(lead to three games. The Yankee
! lelt-hander, who had held the Red
Sox hitless for 6 1-3 innings in
his previous slart last Friday
night, had visions of a "no-no"
as the ballplayers call it Tues
day night until Camilo Carreon
rapped a sharp single oil his glove
with two out in tho seventh.
There .wasn't the least bit of
doubt about Carreon's hit, which
skipped over second base and
rolled Into center field. But that
was the only one of 134 pitches
by Downing which was hit safely.
He struck out 10 batters, walked
six and got the only run he need
ed when Tony Kubek singled
home Hector Lopez in the third in
ning. Lopez then hit a two-run
homer In the fifth. The Yanks'
run in tlie third was their first
off loser Ray Bcrbert (8-5) in 20
consecutive innings.
Morehcad, whose record now is
5-5. pitched perfect ball until he
walked Willie Kirkland with two
out in the seventh. He lost his
no-hittcr when Fred Whitfield led
off tlie eighth with a grounder
that took a freak bounce over
second baseman Chuck Schilling's
head for a single.
Hits Pinch Homer
There was nothing freakish,
however, about John Romano's
pinch honter in tlie ninth. Ro
mano had been restored to the
active list just before tho game.
Tlie Red Sox scored two runs off
loser Barry Latman (5-4) in the
second inning and Lou Clinton's
homer featured a four-run out
burst in tlie sixth.
The Minnesota Twins reeled off
their eighth straight victory and
