In quieter but just as heroic vein, Lockheed officials and air line executives with millions of dollars at stake are portrayed dealing with a grim crisis with only the safety of the flying pub lic their main concern. Emerging from Serling's 154- page book is a salient fact: in every segment of the aviation in dustryfrom the mechanic on the runway to the executive in his walnut-paneled office is a fanat ical dedication to air safety and a haunting sense of personal tragedy when it fails. In a forward to the book. FAA administrator Najoeb E. Halaby writes: "Our goal is swift, safe passage for all who fly anywhere. ;any time, year in. year out. We are indebted to Mr. Serling for helping us all to understand the perils as well as the great prog ress and prospects of aviation." Hitchhiker Asks Arrest SPOKANE. Wash. (UPI Al bert Elmer Otterness, 19. Cheha lis. Wash., turned up at the police station and asked to be arrested. Alter checking the record, as tonished officers complied. Otterness told police he had walked and hitchhiked the 350 miles here from his home to sur render on charges of having no vehicle registration, reck less driving and having no ve hicle operator s license. But police said no warrant had been issued for him when he failed to turn up for his original trial and chances were "one in 10.000" he would have been ar rested. Chikanga, known throughout the continent as a sure-fire curer of illness caused by wicked spirits, has dedicated himself to the task of freeing Nyasaland of witches. Chikanga, 43, arrived in Blan- tyre nattily decked out in a dark blue suit, white shirt, black shoes and brandishing a fly switch. He looked hurt when .someone called him a witch doctor. We are like European doc tors," he said. "The only differ ence is that our medicine comes from our forefathers' spirits."
