In quieter but just as heroic
vein, Lockheed officials and air
line executives with millions of
dollars at stake are portrayed
dealing with a grim crisis with
only the safety of the flying pub
lic their main concern.
Emerging from Serling's 154-

every segment of the aviation in
dustryfrom the mechanic on the
runway to the executive in his
walnut-paneled office is a fanat
ical dedication to air safety and
a haunting sense of personal
tragedy when it fails.
In a forward to the book. FAA

are indebted to Mr. Serling for
helping us all to understand the

Halaby also writes: "Mr. Ser

quickly appoint a citizens com

ing, feeding and entertaining the
14,500 delegates, newsmen and
others directly connected with the
convention who are expected to
pour into the city.
It will be San Francisco's third
major political convention. In
1920 the Democrats met here to
nominate James M. Cox and
Franklin D. Roosevelt, who sub
sequently lost to Warren Harding
and Calvin Coolidge. And in 1956
the Republicans gathered in the
same Cow Palace to re-nominate
President Eisenhower and vice
president Richard M. Nixon.
The Cow Palace, which rcsem
bles a huge quonsot hut, lies near
the southern San Francisco boun

town San Francisco.
Since its completion in 1941. it
has been the site of championship
prize fights, hockey matches,
midget auto races and perfor
mances by such entertainers as
Liberacc and Chubby Checker.

be out of bounds for witches.
The territory's famed witch-
hunter. Chikanga, has staged a
marathon exorcism aimed at lift-
curses, banishing evil spirits
and robbing witches of their ma
gic powers.
Chikanga, known throughout the
continent as a sure-fire curer of
illness caused by wicked spirits,
has dedicated himself to the task
of freeing Nyasaland of witches.
Chikanga, 43, arrived in Blan-
tyre nattily decked out in a dark
blue suit, white shirt, black shoes
and brandishing a fly switch. He
looked hurt when .someone called
him a witch doctor.
We are like European doc
tors," he said. "The only differ
ence is that our medicine comes
from our forefathers' spirits."
Sitting regally in the center of
circle of devoted student "doc
tors," Chikanga unpacked the as
sortment of boxes, bottles, gourds
and bones with which he treats
his patients. He carefully ex-
the unfortunately possessed souls
who came flocking to him for
treatment during his witch-walloping
Blantyre visit.
"1 make two cuts between the
thumb and the index finger on
each hand. Then I put a magic
potion called 'dekani' on the cuts
and the witch's magic goes away.
But if he dales to practice ma
gic again he will die." added the
'doctor' darkly.
Africans are coming in by the
hundreds to see the celebrated
'doctor' rout out witches and dis
possess them of their magic and
free tormented souls of the evil
spirits that make them sick the
bottles and boxes arc there to
trap the spirits.
Chikanga is confident he will
chalk up quite a few cx-wilches

he already has dealt with.

But if you arc a bachelor aged
30 there aro less than three
chances in four you will ever
marry. A 30-ycar-old spinster has
only slightly more than one
chance in two of ever marry

40 has only one chance in five of
finding a husband, but an unmar
ried man the same age has a one
in three chance.
"Two Parly System"
in American Medical Associa
tion writer, Dr. Stanley R. Dean.
described marriage as "probably
the first two-party system of gov

An ideal partnor in this two-
party system, Dr. James H. Pe
terson, University of Southen
California sociologist and marri
age counselor said, is "a person
who meets one's emotional needs,
is within the boundary of one's

physically attractive, and who
maintains interests that are stim

veloped sense of values on which
one can depend, and one who
has fairly similar cultural-refer

As for what makes marriages
go wrong. Peterson warned:
As the age of the individual
goes down from 21, the divorce
rate goes up. The lower the age,
the higher the rate of failure.
The higlier the educational
level, the lower the rate of di
