National Race Remains Same; Orioles Defeat Yankees, 54 Koufax1 Comeback Leading Dodgers By lulled Press International Dust off that comeback of the year award and mail it special delivery to Sandy Koufax of the: Los Anseles Dodgers. There's a long way to go until season's end but it's clear that! Koufax and the award go togeth er like ham and eggs or like guts and skill. A little less than a year ago Koufax' career was endangered by a finger ailment. He didn't win a game for the Dodgers over the second half of the 1963 Na tional League season and he went to spring training this season as one of the biggest question marks in major league baseball. It's taken him just two months to demonstrate that he's shaken off the effects of the ailment and is again one of the great pitch ers of baseball. Throws Fifth Shutout The blinding specdballer turned in his fifth shutout and ninth vic tory of the season Thursday flight when he fireballed the Dodgers to a 3-0 win over the Houston Colts that enabled Los Angeles to retain first place by two per centage points. Koufax struck out 10 and walked only two behind a nine-hit attack that included two hits each by Tommy Davis and Wally Moon. Koufax' five shutouts tie him with Cincinnati's Jim O'Toole for the league lead and his 102 strikeouts in 167 innings leave him only two behind teammate Don Drysdale. Thursday night's game also marked the fifth time this season and the 45th time in his career that Koufax has struck out 10 or more men in a game. The San Francisco Giants shad ed the Chicago Cubs 2-1. the Cin cinnati Reds downed the Pitts burgh Pirates 4-2, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Phila dclphia Phillies 7-3 in other NL j Hot Ramblers Get Victory Eccles' Ramblers, coming on with a surge in the South Subur ban Little League, downed DAR CO. 6-0. and Kingsley remained in the top spot with a 9-4 vic tory over Hal's in Wednesday's action. Willie Mays homered in the bottom of the 10th inning to break up a brilliant pitching duel between Billy O'Dell and Dick Ellsworth and give O'Dell his i ninth win of the season against two losses. Home runs by Leo Cardenas and Gordon Coleman helped the Reds overcome a 2-0 deficit and move into fourth place. John Tsi touris pitched a five-hitter and struck out six to win his second game while Don Cardwell suf- dered his eighth defeat. Ernie Broglio won his seventh game for the Cardinals in game shortened to six innings by rain. Gene Oliver homered for the Cardinals and Earl Averill and Roy Sievers hit homers for the Phillies. At stake in the war with the National Collegiate Athletic Asso ciation is a strong, representa tive team for tlie United States in the 1964 Olympics, and more im mediately for the dual meet with Russia next month. AAU President Louis J. Fisher Thursday called on the NCAA to help present a uniled amateur sports front for tlie Olympics. In a telegram to R. F. Ray of the University of Iowa, president of the NCAA, Fisher said: "Our fine amateur athletes deserve an end of this sports conflict and the United States needs our patriotic cooperation to maintain its right ful place in international sports." The AAU and NCAA have been feuding for control of amateur track and field. It appeared a settlement had been reached with Ihe help of arbitrator General Douglas MacArthur, but there have been several skirmishes be tween the two groups in recent weeks.
