When it got as far as Washington Street it decided it had enough of big city life and started to make an exit. Last seen, city police were trying to shoo it back to the wilderness. wanted to see how wilds in a hurry Friday El Higher State Income Taxes Scheduled For October Date SALEM (UPI) - The 4B million slate Income tax increase adopted by the WW legislature tips the! state tax 28 per cent. The federal deduction has been eliminated, but you can deduct the full amount of your higher state tax from your federal in como tax return. Tins means a flehlly lower federal lax, liencc in effect Uncle Sam will be pay inn part of your higher stale tax bill. Wage earners who have their slate income tax withhold from their pay checks won't notice the difference until their first pay check In October. That's when the: new rates are expected to go into: eflect. ' The new stale Income (ax meas ure will become law Sept. 2 un less It is rclerrcd by the voters. If it Is referred, the legislature has set aside 100,000 and a date in October for a special election. Under the new tax measure, the familiar Siwo exemption is gone. It has been replaced with a $22 credit for ench dependent. The bill provides a minimum tax of $5, or I it cent of adjust ed gross income, whichever is greater. The bill also includes "fraction al rales" ranging from 2 to 7'4 ner rent, end designed to put tax payers in the next highest brackci after each moderate increase in income. The Stale Board of Higher Edu cation received $1,781,627 for pay raises for academic personnel. Merit Raises Too This money Is in addition to automatic merit increases. The governor was raised $1,500 to $21,500 a year. In addition, he receives $000 a month lor ex penses. The secretary of stale and state treasurer also received a $1,500 pay increase, bringing their pay up to $16,500 a year. The attorney general and labor commissioner were raised $1,000 a year to $16,000. I Pay lor the newly-created posl ' lion of state fire marshal was set in a range from $8,200 U $10,140. Racing Commissioner, who was given the additional duties or pan- mutucl supervisor, was increased $6,840 to a top ot $12,840. One Salary Unchanged The annual salary of the super intendent of public instruction was unchanged, and still ranges from $14,800 to $17,700. Salaries of state policemen were increased. The (op pay or re cruits was upped $120 to a lop of $4,800. Privates were upped $180 to a top of $5,820: privates first class up $120 to $6,600; corporals up $120 to $6,900; sergeants up $300 In $7,500; lieutenants up $480 to (8,580, and captains up $900 to $9,900. Highest - paid state employe Is Roy E. Lieuollen, chancellor of the Slate System of Higher Edu cation, who receives $26,000 a year plus a house, car and ex pense allotment. Next highest ex cept (or the governor are the su perintendents of the state's men tal hospitals, upped to a uniform $19,6110.
