May 27, 1963 1 NEGRO DEMONSTRATION In Raleigh, N.C., hundreds of Negro students from Shaw Un!verity marched down the main street Saturday in a demonstration against the few remaining merchants, eating places and movie houses which refuse them serv ice. Traffic on the broad street in the heart of North Carolina's capital city was blocked the full length. UP! Telephoto Bishop Asks Episcopalians To Fight For Negro Rights WASHINGTON (UPD-The pre-i siding bishop of the Episcopal Church Issued an extraordinary personal appeal Saturday to 3 5 million American Episcopalians to become "actively Involved In the fight for Negro rights. In a pastorial letter that was read Sunday morning from the pulpits of many Episcopal churches, the Rt. Rev. Arthur Lichtenberger warned of "the pos sible imminence of catastrophe unless American society acts more swiftly to grant the "legit imate" demands of Negroes for basic human rights. - He said the Episcopal Church has "made clear on many occa sions" its conviction that racial discrimination is contrary to the teaching of Christ. But there is now "urgent need to demonstrate by specific actions" that the church is fighting on the side of "those who are victims of oppres sion." "It Is not enough for the church to exhort men to be good," said Bishop Lichtenbergcr. "Men, wom en and children are today risking their livelihood and their lives in protesting for their rights. We must support and strengthen their protest in every way possible, rather than give support to the! forces of resistance by our si lence." He specifically exhorted Episco palians to do three things: I. "Actively support" efforts in every community, "north and south," to eliminate racial bar riers In housing, employment, pub lic accommodations and schools Give money" to Negro or-; ganizations fighting for racial justice. "The struggle of Negro Americans for their rights is costly," he said, and they need help." 3. Take immediate steps In every Lpiscopal diocese and parish to eliminate the "intoler able scandal" of "discrimination within the body of the church It self." He said that many church related schools and other Institu tions "have a considerable dis tance to go in bringing their prac tices up to the standard" of racial inclusiveness set by the church. Story Stings Legislators SALEM (UPI) - The Oregon Legislature was muttering Fri day about a stinging article pub lished in the Oregon Labor Press. The newspaper claimed this the 'longest and costliest" session in history. It quoted James Man of the Oregon AKLrCIO as saying it was the worst In his experience, which dates back to 1945. Most legislators objected pri vately. Rep. Edward whclan, D-Port- land, however, took to the House floor to announce he resented the! article. Wheian, a labor official himself, said the session has been hard-working and has a satisfac tory record. My husband lost his job the same week we were married. I took on a night job in addition to my eight-hour day shift because we owe on car, appliances, furniture, clothing and he was up to his neck in debt before we married. I get only four or five hours sleep at night and when I'm awake I'm on the go every min ute. I believe my husband is real ly trying to find work but things are tough in this town and he hasn't had, any luck. I'm not complaining about his unemployment, but rather that he refuses to do anything around the apartment to help me. He won't shop for groceries or straighten thing else which might make your life easier. Any woman who has proven her willingness to go the extra mile, as you have, deserves all the help she can get. Bear Ann Landers: Several months ago my husband and I entertained a couple in our home. When they left, the woman said, "We had a lovely time. And now you must come to see us some time." My husband has been nagging me ever since to go visit these people. I keep telling him we'll go when we get an invitation. He insists we have been invited and repeats the "Come and see us sometime" line. I have told him repeatedly that I don't consider this an invitation but he claims I am thin-skinned and too formal. If I am wrong about this I wish you would tell me. If my husband is wrong, please tell him so he will get off my back. Thank you -NOT SURE Dear Not: "Come and see us sometime" is a polite phrase equi valent to "How are you." Cooper Said Justified In Plumbing Complaint SAN FRANCISCO (UPD-When astronaut Gordon Cooper com plained about his "plumbing prob lems" encountered in his voyage through space, his complaint was justified. Dr. Charles A. Berry, chief of medical operations at the Manned Spacecraft Center, talked frankly with newsmen Friday about some of the biological problems encoun tered by space fliers. Cooper's main difficulty in or bit. Dr. Berry said, was with the system designed to pipe con densed perspiration from his space suit. This condensate wa ter, including some of the steam from his breath, totaled nearly two quarts when it filled a stor age tank to overflowing half way through the trip. who say "Come and see us sometime." A meaningful invitation includes a specific day and time. To learn how to keep your boy friend in line without losing him, send for Ann Landers' booklet, 'Necking and Petting And How Far To Co," enclosing with your request 20 cents in coin and a long, self -addressed, stamped envelope. Ann Landers will be glad to help you with your problems. Send them to her in care of this news paper enclosing a stamped, self addressed envelope. With seven orbits left to go, Cooper tried to switch the con densate tube so that it led into an empty drinking water tank. To do this he had to plug a needle tipped tube from his suit into a rubber socket on the water tank, and then work a one-ounce sy ringe operating as a pump, by hand. It was such strenuous work that the needle tip of the tube broke, and the syringe finally fell apart. As a result, Cooper sweated vig orously inside his suit for seven orbits, and the moisture had no place to go. Dr. Berry said the elaborate sys tem designed to handle Cooper's urine worked better, and medical lexperts recovered four separate urine samples for study. The urine-collecting tank was connected to a type outside the suit, and an outside tube, with a needle tip and a syringe hand pump, led into each of the four plastic storages successfully. Cooper lost seven pounds in all through dehydration. it Horn Remodeling Roofing Siding Foundations ir Houie Raising FRANK COTTON Phone TU 2-0008 Every year, one of every nine U.S. women between the agesi of 15 and 44 has a baby. 131-42-74 SI ,f TAUtUS I -i MAY 21 22-28-85-87 JJ JUNE 22 '6I-O770 ITVM5.51-5S CANCII JUNE 23 JULY 23 N 2- 7-lMOl ' uo j JULY 24 L- AUG. 23 UA44-47.53-5S HV72-7X vmco AUG. 24 SEPT. 22 VV2-15.18.3a 36-38-8.
