But they could sneak in with some unexpected points should Medford's fine Tornado team and the Cavemen of Grants Pass get wrapped up in too much of a duel between themselves. Medford will be a slight favorite to capture the meet honors with the Cavemen a close second. KU is ranked a strong third with no contention, virtually, Irom Cra ter and Ashland. Walt Smith, the state's best javelin thrower, heads the list of Pelicans into the meet. The husky junior spear specialists has the best mark in the state with a heave of 214-4'j. The second best toss is bv Ashland's Tom Huff at 203. Huff, a former Pelican, will be expected to give Smith another great duel. Smith will be the only first place favorite for the Pelicans. A possibility for a first is big Bill Mills, another junior weight- man. Mills has the best discus toss in the league and the fourth best in the state at 156 feet. He will be a favorite here. However, he will have to pour it on in the shot put. His best effort is 50- Arie DeGroot will be matched against some of the best sprint ers in the state. He will run both I he loo and 220 and a leg on the relay. He will be going against Mike Deibele and Jim Hall of Medford and Rich Ireland of Grants Pass. Deibele has the best 220 mark in the state and the second best 100. The broad jumping crew w ill be Grover Dahn. Terrv Eccles and possibly Mickey Bender. Don Graham will carry the KU colors in the high hurdles and John English will compete in the low hurdles. Both will be decided underdogs. Gerritt DeGroot, however, could be one of the better quar ter milers in the league. He won over the Medford entry in their dual meet at Modoc Field and could turn in another such per formance with a good day. The distance runners will have some trouble. Don Piper will run the half mile for the Pelicans. His best is 2:06.7. He will be matching strides- with Steve Toews who has the fourth best time in the slate with a line clocking of 1:57.3. He will be the favorite in this race. Bob Scholl and Steve Lawrence carry the KU hopes in the mile but neither figure to have tne speed to carry them across the finish line in front of the pack. The Pelicans also figure to fin ish third in the 880-yard relay. Medford has the best time in the state in this event with a 1:30.7 clocking. Grants Pass has the second spot favorite s role. Hut the Pelicans could nudge the Cavemen in this one. They came very near doing it in their dual meeting.
