Etoufax Exposes Myth With Win; Hed Sox Cop Pair From LA Braves' Hurler Comes Near No-Hit Game Against Cards By l'nited Press International Sandy Koufax exposed one of baseball's oldest myths today by proving a pitcher doesn't neces sarily have to take his lumps the next time out after a no-hitter. Down through the years rela tively few major league pitchers have managed to go the distance in their next game following a no-hit performance. Koufax, who hurled a no-hitter against the San Francisco Giants last Saturday night, not only want nine innings Wednesday night but did better than that, going 12 while leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 3-2 extra inning triumph over the Philadel phia Phillies. The southpaw fastballcr gave up 11 hits but struck out 12 and did not walk a man. It was only the second time in his major league career that he did not give up a walk during an entire game. Ron Fairly provided Koufax with his fifth victory by singling home Jim Gilliam from second base in the bottom of the 12th. Reliever Johnny Klippstein had retired 14 straight batters before Gilliam singled in the 12th and moved up to second base on Bob Oldis' passed ball. Braves Down Cardinals Elsewhere in the National League, the Milwaukee Braves defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 9- 3, the league-leading San Fran cisco Giants shaded the Pitts burgh Pirates 4-3, the Cincinnati Reds crushed the Chicago Cubs 10- 2. and the New . York Mets snapped the Houston Colls' six game winning streak 7-4. In the American League, the first-place Chicago White Sox topped the Detroit Tigers 7-4, the Boston Red Sox took two from the Los Angeles Angels 9-3 and 7-6, the Cleveland Indians beat the Kansas City A's 1-0, the New York Yankees downed the Minne sota Twins 4-3, and the Balti more Orioles defeated the Wash ington Senators 7-1. Bob Hendley of the Braves held the Cardinals hitlcss for B 1-3 in nings before Curt Flood tripled. The Milwaukee southpaw gave up two more hits in the ninth and settled fur a three-hitter and his fourth victory. Denis Menke con nected for his fourth homer of the year off Curt Simmons, who lost his first game after five straight' victories. Held To Four Hits The Giants were limited to four hits by loser Don Cardwell and two Pirate relievers but rallied for four runs in the fifth to win. Carriweii. now 1-5. walked win ning pitcher Juan Marichal 5-3 with the bases full in the fifth and hit Felipe Alou with a pitch to force in another run. An error by third baseman Bob Bailey on Willie Mays' hard smash pro duced two more runs. Frank Robinson and rookie Pete Rose each collected three hits to pace the Reds to their victory over the Cubs as Jim Ma loney won his first game of the season with help from Al Worth ington. Southpaw Al Jackson scattered nine hits and struck out six to post his fourth victory for the Mets in their game with the Colts. The Mets took advantage of three unearned runs to hand Ken Johnson his sixth defeat in seven decisions. The 21-year-old native of Bel mont. Mass.. was signed by the Red Sox in '1060 just alter being named the outstanding high school hurler in the greater Boston area. He saw action in a Red Sox uniform briefly at the end of the last two seasons, and he may be wearing that uniform on a more permanent basis if he continues to pitch as he did Wednesday. Wood held San Diego to six hits and picked up his fourth straight victory as the Rainicrs blanked the Padres 4-0. Wood fanned eight men and showed perfect control in not walking a batter. George Williams' home run sparked a four-run rally by Oklahoma City that carried the BOcrs to a 7-3 victory over Den vcr, Hawaii blasted out of a long batting slump with 17 hits to turn hack Portland 9-3. the Dallas-Fort Worth Rangers used the home run ball to defeat Salt Lake City 9-5 and superb relief pitching by Ken Rdwe preserved Spokane's 6-4 victory over Tacoma. Wood got all the offensive sup port he needed from teammate Billy Harrcll who drove in three runs with two singles and a sacri fice fly. Oklahoma City and Denver were deadlocked 3-3 w h e rr Williams smashed his home run with two men on base to ignite a four-run outburst by the Biters in the seventh. Johnny Weekly had accounted for all three Oklahoma City runs in the early innings with three hits. Starter Ben Johnson, who left the game for a pinch hitter in the seventh, was credited with the victory, his second in three decisions. Render Lead Islanders Veteran Carlos Bernier made the most noise in Hawaii's hitting spree with five hits in five trips, including a bases-empty home run.
