This does not necessarily mean Frick is in favor of casing the rule. On the contrary, he has al ready said, "I am in favor of enforcing the rules." So far this season National league umpires have called 96 Phone Call To Pastrano Checked NEW ORLEANS (UPlI The Federal Bureau of Investigation checked today into a threatening phone call which heavyweight box er Willie Pastrano said he re ceived shortly before a Las Vegas bout last Saturday. Pastrano, a native of New Or leans who now lives in Miami, said an old acquaintance in New Orleans threatened to hurt or kill his wife and children if he went through with and won his fight against Wayne Thornton. He won the bout. The boxer called attorney Sam Monk Zeldon here and Zeldon had police arrest Vincent Bonomo, 27, a former preliminary boxer, in connection with the alleged threat. Zeldon said Pastrano was very upset about the call. Pastrano ral lied in the last rounds to defeat Thornton at Las Vegas. A return match is being scheduled. An FBI spokesman said an in vestigation was being made to de termine "if there is a violation of a federal law." Zeldon said he did not know w hy Pastrano was threatened. "Someone must have made a pretty good bet," he said. Pastrano and Zeldon are long time friends. The attorney quoted Pastrano as saying he knew Bo nomo but had not seen him in about three years. "1 feel there should be a uni form interpretation of the balk rule by both leagues," Frick said. "When we are finished with our meeting today, I expect that the same instructions will be sent to all umpires in both leagues,' he added. "We all have to oper ate by the same rule." Frick does not have the power to change the rule, nor docs Giles or Cronin. The only way a change could be made is by base ball's official rules committee. which is not scheduled to meet until the winter. Frick s chief concern now is that a uniform rule be applied when the two leagues meet the annual All-Star Game July 9 at Cleveland and when they meet again in the World Sc ries this October. Otherwise, enforcement of the balk rule is strictly up to Amcri can and National League um pires, who are under the juris diction of Cronin and Giles. Giles instructed his umpires last week to return to a more liberal interpretation of the one second stop requirement for pitchers with men on base but balk calls in the National League! still have not decreased apprcci ably. Layne. a 15-year veteran of NFL warfare, made his disclo sure in a letter to Pittsburgh Slecler Coach Buddy Parker aft er a season which saw him set career records in four passing categories. The Steelers disclosed Laync's retirement plans Monday. 'Die 36-ycar-old Layne, who now lives at Lubbock, Tex., was an All-America football player at the University of Texas. He began his professional foot ball career with the Chicago Bears in 1948 bul was traded quickly to the old New York Bull dogs. From there he went to Detroit for seven seasons and played his last five campaigns with the Steelers. Yanks Crush Tigers Baring their muscles for the first time in weeks, the Yankees rattled off IS hits and ran up their highest run tolal of the sea son Monday night in crushing the Detroit Tigers, 10-3. The Tigers ended Ford s string of scoreless innings at 20 when they got to him for three runs in the fourth inning but the veteran southpaw still registered his third straight victory even though Jim Bouton relieved him in the sev enth. Mantle enjoyed a perfect night by driving ill three runs on three hits in as many times at bat Wilh the Yanks leading 4-3, he slashed a two-run homer off loser Hank Aguirre (3-3) in the seventh to make the score 6-3. Tom Trcsh, who also collected three hits, then unloaded a three- run homer off reliever Paul Foy tack in tlie eighth to cap a four run rally. Bobby Richardson also had three hits and drove in two runs. In the only other American League games scheduled, the Chi cago White Sox beat Kansas City, 5-1. and tlie Los Angeles Angels snapped a four-game losing streak with a 5-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins. Pirates Beat Dodgers Only one game was played in tlie National League, with tlie Pittsburgh Pirates downipg the Los Angeles Dodgers, 7-4. Gary Peters of the White Sox, given his first major league start made the most of it by limiting the A's to four hits and belting a home run himself. Peters tired after eight innings, however, and Jim Brosnan picked up 24 hours earlier from the Reds, relieved him in the ninth and set down the A's in or der, striking out two of the three batters he faced.
