Giles and Joe Cronin today that
he (eels the balk rule should be
called the same way in both the
National and American leagues.
This does not necessarily mean
Frick is in favor of casing the
rule. On the contrary, he has al
ready said, "I am in favor of
enforcing the rules."

checked today into a threatening
phone call which heavyweight box
er Willie Pastrano said he re
ceived shortly before a Las Vegas
bout last Saturday.
Pastrano, a native of New Or
leans who now lives in Miami,
said an old acquaintance in New
Orleans threatened to hurt or kill
his wife and children if he went
through with and won his fight
against Wayne Thornton. He won
the bout.
The boxer called attorney Sam
Monk Zeldon here and Zeldon had
police arrest Vincent Bonomo, 27,
a former preliminary boxer, in
connection with the alleged threat.
Zeldon said Pastrano was very
upset about the call. Pastrano ral
lied in the last rounds to defeat
Thornton at Las Vegas. A return
match is being scheduled.
An FBI spokesman said an in
vestigation was being made to de
termine "if there is a violation
of a federal law."
Zeldon said he did not know w hy
Pastrano was threatened.
"Someone must have made a
pretty good bet," he said.
Pastrano and Zeldon are long
time friends. The attorney quoted
Pastrano as saying he knew Bo
nomo but had not seen him in
about three years.

to change the rule, nor docs Giles
or Cronin. The only way a
change could be made is by base
ball's official rules committee.

From there he went to Detroit

The Klamath Union Pelicans,
rained out last weekend in Grants
Pass, were scheduled to travel
to Medford to take on the
league-leading Black Tornado,
weather permitting.
1 lie Pelicans were to have
played Grants Pass Saturday in
a doubleheader on the Cavemen's
field. But heavy downpours Fri
day caused postponement of that
set.
The same may be true todav
w ith the Medford scries. The Pels
and Black Toinado have not met
yet this season. Medford leads
the league with a 6-0 record and
Klamath is second in the stand

over the Tornado is a near must
for tlie Pelicans in order to win
the league title

everything was going to be okay
with the Yanks.
When some alarmists suggested
this could be one of their off
years. Manager Ralph Houk said
not a chance. When questions
were raised about Whitcy Ford's
arm. the Yankee manager said
don't worry. And when anyone
asked when Mickey Mantle would
start hitting, Houk always said
soon.
It looks as if he was right on
all counts.
Technically, the Yankees are
tied for first place in tlie Ameri
can League today with the Kan
sas City Athletics but the A's had
better hurry up and get a picture
of that because that situation is
subject to change on short notice.
Yanks Crush Tigers
Baring their muscles for the
first time in weeks, the Yankees
rattled off IS hits and ran up
their highest run tolal of the sea
son Monday night in crushing the
Detroit Tigers, 10-3.
The Tigers ended Ford s string
of scoreless innings at 20 when
they got to him for three runs in
the fourth inning but the veteran
southpaw still registered his third
straight victory even though Jim
Bouton relieved him in the sev
enth.
Mantle enjoyed a perfect night
by driving ill three runs on three
hits in as many times at bat
Wilh the Yanks leading 4-3, he
slashed a two-run homer off loser
Hank Aguirre (3-3) in the seventh
to make the score 6-3.
Tom Trcsh, who also collected
three hits, then unloaded a three-
run homer off reliever Paul Foy
tack in tlie eighth to cap a four
run rally. Bobby Richardson also
had three hits and drove in two
runs.
In the only other American
League games scheduled, the Chi
cago White Sox beat Kansas City,
5-1. and tlie Los Angeles Angels
snapped a four-game losing
streak with a 5-4 victory over the
Minnesota Twins.
Pirates Beat Dodgers
Only one game was played in
tlie National League, with tlie
Pittsburgh Pirates downipg the
Los Angeles Dodgers, 7-4.
Gary Peters of the White Sox,
given his first major league start
made the most of it by limiting
the A's to four hits and belting
a home run himself.
Peters tired after eight innings,
however, and Jim Brosnan
picked up 24 hours earlier from
the Reds, relieved him in the
ninth and set down the A's in or
der, striking out two of the three
batters he faced.
