Pelicans Divide With Pesky Ashland iaseballers, 4-2, 0-1 Hurlers Have Hot Duel In Second Grants Pass Thinclads Trample Pelicans Easily, 92-30 Walt Smith Sets New School Record In GRANTS PASS-The very pow erful Grants Pass Cavemen, one of the top track powers in the state, rolled over the Klamath Union track team here Satur day with ease, 92-30, on a day which saw a couple of records set. There were two events which were stickouts among the others. Walt Smith set a new Klamath Union school record in the javelin Sunday, April 2, 1963 HERALD AM) NEWS. Gilchrist Wins Own Track Meet GILCHRIST - The Gilchrist Grizzlies, getting tougher with each meet, won a four-way meet on their home field Saturday by edging the Bend Jayvees, Bly and Paisley. The Grizzlies won the meet when Dave Sporrer won the dis cus in the last event with a heave of 117-9. The final scoring was 64'i for Gilchrist and B2 for Bend. Paisley had 15' i and Bly 10. This was the fifth victory in succession for Gilchrist. Coach Jerry Bennett says that his team is improving all the time and believes that the Grizzlies can push Bonanza for the league title. Their chances- were hurt, how ever, when Boh Mayfield broke some bones in his foot last week in practice. For the story and other pictures, see Page 2-B Javelin Throw and the best throw in the state this year thus far with a tre mendous heave of 214-4'i. It broke his own record of 20S-84 which he set only Tuesday in the County Track Meet at Modoc Field. Grants Pass' Bob Shepard set a new standard for the high jump ers in the state season. He leaped over the parallel bar at M'a. That is the best high school PAGE 1-B Klamath Falls, Oregon clockings. Jack Hazlewood copped the half mile run in a fairly slow 2:15 with Bend's Shepard winning the mile in a slow 5:12.4. Matt Koski won the 120-yard high hurdles for the Grizzlies in 16.8 and Hazlewood took the 180 yard lows in 23.4. Bend's Stock dale captured the shot put with a fine 41-3' effort. Fredrickson of Bend was the javelin winner with a fine toss of 162-7. Paisley got its only first in the high jump wch re Dave Brattain won at 5-4. Bend's Nicholson won the pole vault at 104 and Gil christ's Koski won the broad jump with a leap of 19-4. Gilchrist, with Lynes. Denny Jessup. The only other first the Pelicans got wah from a good discus toss by -big Bill Mills He hurled his career's best Sat urday of 149-2. He still is short of the school record, however. Mills finished second in the shot behind a 51-4 throw by Marty Bauer of Grants Pass. Dong Graham placed third in the 120-yard high hurdles behind a winning time of 15.4 which is the best clocking he has had this season. Rich Ireland was the tri ple winner for the Cavemen Sat urday. He took the broad jump with a leap of 20-2, the 100-yard dash in 10.4 and the 220-yard dash in a mediocre time of 23.4. Arie DeGroot, rapidly improv ing, finished second to Ireland in both the dashes. Grover Dahn finished second in the broad jump and sophomore Terry Eccles was third. Steve Lawrence finished third in the mile which had a winning time of 4:48. Randy Howard, an other sophomore, was a very close third in the 440-yard dash behind a winning time of 54.0. Charlie Church, a sophomore. placed third in the 180-yard low- hurdles and Eccles finished third in the high jump. Al Hutchins was second in the high jump, with a 6-2 leap for the Cavemen. The Cavemen swept the pole vault. Don Piper tied for second in the half mile when Dennis Water man won in 2:04.4. Grants Pass won the 880-yard relay in 1:35. Coach Jack Peterson wasn't too satisfied with some of the events but was happy with others. He was pleased with the good ettorts of Arie DeGroot in the dashes and with Smith and Mi us in their specialties. He said the track was slow after a lot of rain in the valley. LJTrN L ASHLAND-The Klamath Union Pelicans split Saturday's double header with Ashland as the Griz zlies cot some measure of re venge for the twin no - hitters thrown against them in Uie two opening games of the Southern Oregon Conference. The Pelicans had to go nine innings to down the pesky Griz zlies in the first game, 4-2. The nhitebirds dropped the second game in a brilliant pitching duel between hard luck Gary Benson and' John Rhodes. Each hurler spun one-hitters with Benson tak ing Uie heartbreaking loss. the split left the Pelicans in sole possession of second place with a 6-2 record while Medford remains the king of the hill with a (W) mark. Crater, which could be a big darkhorse in the league, is third with a 6-4 record. Ashland is 2-6 and Grants Pass is winless in eight games. The Pelicans banged out 12 hits to only four for the Grizzlies in the first game and still had to go extra frames to win. They also had to rally for the victory. Ihe Grizzlies took command in the third frame with one out. Catcher Bob Deboer walked and took second on a passed ball. Jan Susee flied nut to left and Khndes, playing first in the first game, singled to score Deboer. Klamath tied the game up in the sixth on a single by Lanny Guyer, Pel second sackcr, an other single by centcrfielder Lar ry Smith, a pair of fly outs and a single by third baseman John Parisotto for the run. Ashland came right back in their half. however, to regain the lead. Bill Tilford walked, went to second on Dean Samuclson's walk and to third on the base-filling walk to Hick Pierce. A ground ball by Boh Manz scored Tilford for the second run. The Pelicans rallied in the lop of the seven!
