i 1 ecii Captures First Oregon Tech Open Decathlon Title By JERRY WAGGONKR Herald and News Siwris Editor Ed Cecil, a stocky-built Ore Son Tech trackman, won the first Annual Open Decathlon at the Mile High track Friday and . Saturday by beating out a sur ' ffrisinfi second place finish of Bob Bryant by 255 points. Cecil, who was the outsland ' ing thinclad at the meet in Bend ' last week, compiled 4,307 points ' to 4.052 for Bryant, the thin ' little man who looks like any thing but a cecathlon compet itor. John M a r i c i c h fin ished third with 3.602 points , and Bob Chard fourth with 3,498 .' points. Kenny Lenhardt, the student coach of the track team, :' was. fifth with 3,328 points and Coach Larry Burleson was sixth with 2,647. Dick Skinner, a student at OTI but not a track team man, was seventh with 2,175 points and Norm Johns finished eighth with 2,012 points despite hav ing competed in only the first five events Friday. He failed to show up lor the Saturday's last five events. The decathlon, a gruelling se ries of 10 events which test an athletes' skill and conditioning simultaneously, was open to all comers. But only athletes from the school and one downtown competitor took part. Athletes from Kingslcy were slated to take part but didn't show up. The five events run off Fri day were the 100-yard dash, the broad jump, the high jump, the 330-yard dash, and the shot put. The Saturday events were the high hurdles, the pole vault, discus, javelin and three-quarter mile. The Friday events were ham pered some by a strong and brisk wind which was bad for running because cf the cold. The IPO-yard dash with Cecil. Bryant and Maricich running in the first heat, turned In the best time with Maricich winning in 9.9. Cecil was timed in 10 flat. Maricich took the broad jump laurels with a 19 2 leap against the wind. Bryant was second with a leap of 18-4 and Bob Chard and Johns each leaped 16-2 Coach Larry Burleson took shot put honors with little trou ble. He heaved the 16-pound iron ball 45-3. Cecil was the only Yankee Homers Rip Foe NEW YORK (UPII Mickey Mantle returned to the New York Yankees' lineup for the first time in more than two weeks Satur day but Joe Pepitone, Tom Tresh and Clete Boyer supplied the home runs that enabled Ralph Terry to defeat the Cleveland In dians, 8-1. Pepitone and Tresh hit their homers off loser Dick Donovan with the bases empty while Boy er connected with the bases full off southpaw Ron Nischwitz in the eighth inning. EASY DOES IT WILLIE Oregon Tech's Willie Anderson, competing under the colon of the Klamath Basin Athletic Association, clears the hiqh'jump at 5-2 with ease while still wearing his tweat uniform. Gibbon, making his first start since last Aug. 21, was a last minute replacement for Earl Francis who suffered a muscle spasm in a pre-game workout. The gangling left-hander was touched for a single by Hon Hunt and Gil Hodges and a double by Charlie N'cal. He struck out six and the only run he yielded was unearned. Roston reliever Jack Imabe gained credit for his first Ameri can league victory by limiting the White Sox to five hits and one run over the last five innings. Boston's winning rally started off Bob Tillman's infield hit, a sacrifice, and singles hy Chuck Schilling and Roman Mcjias for one run. Hchcrt went out and De Busschcre got Carl Yastrzemski for the second out, but walked Dick Stuart tn fill the bases. Ie Busschcre uncorked a wild pitch to score one run and when catcher J. C. Martin threw wild into (lie Boston dugout, two more runs scored. After conferring, the umpires overruled an earlier deci sion and allowed only one run on the throwing error. Twins Rap Error-Prone Tigers, 9-3 DETROIT (UP! -The Minne sota Twins, capitalizing on shaky Detroit Tiger lielding, picked up seven unearned runs in the first five innings Saturday and went to record a 9-3 American League triumph behind the hit ting of Earl Battey who knocked in four runs. Led handcr Dick Sligman set down the Tigers on five hits and Jim Hall chipped in with i two run third inning double and Bat tey slammed a three-run fifth inning homer to give him all the help he needed. one even reasonably close with a toss of 41 feet even. Chard tossed it 36-2. The high jump proved to be one of the best efforts of the decathlon. Little Bryant, who stands only about 5-8 himself, won the event at 5-11, The bar was set at six feet but it mea sured out at 5-11, He was all alone. Burleson was second with a 5-4 leap and Johns and Skin ner each cleared 5-2. Cecil jumped back into the lead when he won the 330-yard dash in 40.3 despite the strong wind. Maricich was second in 40.7 and Bryant third in 42.9. Cecil finished the first day's events with a slim lead over Bryant, Maricich and Johns and Chard. The Saturday events were un der good conditions but the as signments were a little bit tough er. Bryant jumped right back into the picture with a fine 12.3 clocking over the 90-yard high hurdles Cecil was second in 13.1 and Ken Lenhardt third in 14.1. Bob Chard came out first in the discus to gain points when he hurled the disc 131-6. Coach Burleson was second at 126-7. Cecil was third with a heave of 109-5. The most difficult of all the events for all the competitors proved to be the pole vault. . Few had ever vaulted and the xiints is Cecil finished fourth in 4:12 to wrap up tne oecain lon title. Maricich was second in 4:104 and Lenhardt third at 4:08. More decathlons are planned this summer and anyone wish ing to enter may do so. There is no age limit. Keep watching this paper for the dates and sites of such events. eight-foot minimum for scoring was a distant height for most. Chard surprised in this event and won it at nine feet. The final event was won by Bryant in a clocking of four minutes flat in the three-quarter mile' run. Dowling had a 5-3 record with the Hunkers as their head master last year. He will begin at Prine. villc in September. He is a gradu ate of the University of Idaho and coached at Priest River, Idaho, before coming to Lakeview.
