(LPII-A Negro leader said an intensive voter registration campaign would begin today in this industrial city where 13 days of racial demon strations have brought more than 230 arrests. Miss." 34 Negroes Arrested There has been a relative quiet in Greenwood recently but Negro folk singer Leon Bibb said in New York Monday he was leaving for Mississippi to join the "front lines" of civil rights battles. The Negroes were charged with parading without a permit and a few with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. One picket's sign said. "Hospitals are segregated in the all-America city." I King Goes On Trial Negro leader Martin Luther King Jr., who kicked off the rac ial demonstrations here April 3. went on trial Monday with 52 other Negroes arrested in a pro test march last Friday. But de fense attorneys asked that the trial be moved to federal court on the ground hal King would not get a fair trial in city court. King was returned to jail pend ing federal court action on the motion. King's wife said in Atlanta Mon day night that President Kennedy had assured "me of my husband s safety." I'l Cancer Said Leading Killer Of School Children "They must have radar vision What is the leading cause of death from disease among school children? Few people are aware that the leading killer is cancer. The statistics notwithstanding, the American Cancer Society be lieves that greater education among parents and broader appli cation by physicians of knowledge now possessed could cut down the growing number of deaths from cancer in children. M r s. John Dickinson, publicity chair man of the local chapter of the American Cancer Society, report ed Monday. April has been designated as the' month when the American Cancer Society will receive dona tions for its annual nationwide fund drive. The American Cancer Society reports that last year some 4,700 children under the age of 13 died of cancer. "From 1934 to 1959. deaths from cancer in children increased from 5.2 (or each 100.000 popu lation to 8 1," the ACS reported. The increase is due in part to the survival of mapy children who might have died from some other disease, such as diphtheria or smallpox, not so long ago. A number of children's diseases. other than cancer, have been con trolled. But some 4.800 children will die of cancer in 1963, if death rates follow present trends. The ACS pointed out that one of the problems of dealing with cancer in children is the "un happy fact that too many child hood tumors are treated too late." An increasing number of 5, 10 and 20-year and even lifetime survivals show that treatment when started early can often ex tend one's longevity. Can the survival rate be in creased? The ACS says it can. Education can help. A great many parents are no longer Ig norant of the fact that children as well as adults mav have can cer. "But too often todav we hear, the remark 'I did not know my child could have cancer.' If more parents realized that chil dren mav have cancer, just as adults do, and acted promptly in seeking medical advice more children could be saved. The ACS said that improved techniques in radiology and sur gery "ofler a child with cancer new opportunities tor survival and possible cure." Leukemia, cancer of the blood- Jl'DGE JAILS LAWYER BIRMINGHAM. Ala. UP1 -Circuit Judge Wallace Gibson Thursday ordered attorney Mar cus Jones to jail for six hours be cause he was late to court. Jones arrived an hour late and apologized, explaining he was in volved in a federal court case. But the judge said Jones had been late too often and sentenced him for contempt of court. Progressive ?Tax Studied SALEM (UPD A progressive . rate structure w ith a top rate of six per cent, designed to raise about S3 million, was proposed today by a subcommittee of the i House Tax Committee. The committee already has adopted an overall program call-' jng for a flat rate on all earned w income above $500. Oregon's pi es l ent top rate is 9.5 per cent. The subcommittee also recom i mended that the one per cent net -receipts tax apply to the first "l JI6.0O0 of income, instead of the ; first $15,000 as originally proposed "i by the full committee. Another subcommittee recom 'Emendation was a $22 tax credit, ' instead of the $20 recommended .by the full committee. This would replace the present $600 personal and dependency cNcmption. "But there is hope," the ACS said. "Newly developed drugs make it possible to extend the lives of many leukemia patients from mouths to years of useful life. There is growing evidence that viruses are a possible caue of leukemia. If this is proved, then a vaccine may be developed." The American Cancer Society is the leading voluntary health agency fighting leukemia and oth er childhood cancers. Urging the public to support the society's crusade, it states, "There can be no slackening of effort now.
