The general theme of the contest was conserva tion. The specific theme for older students was "Enemies of the Forest." Two of the first place winners, Vicki Huettl and Jeneane Oppelt, were entered in the state finals in Portland. Funny Stuff Traps Pair In Robbery COLLEGE PARK, Md. (UPD Two men marched into Pete's Liquor Store Friday night, bran dished a pistol and demanded the cash "without any funny stuff." They got the cash and more funny stuff than they could stand They raced out the door with $400 and leaped into the getaway car, a 1953 Packard. It chugged off in a cloud of blue smoke. It hadn t gone lar when, ac cording to one of the men, some thing went "kerplunk" and the automobile groaned to a halt on busy U.S. Houto 1. The robbers jumped out, raised the hood and began tinkering with the engine. Horns began blaring as traffic backed up behind them. Siren screaming, a police car swerved around the stalled car on its way to the liquor stoic. At the sceno of the holdup, witness told police the robbers fled In a "beat-up old Packard." The police went to their car and sped to the traffic jam, which was growing worse. The bandits, with the wail of sirens returning, decided the Pack ard was beyond repair and took to the woods nearby. An irate motorist complained to the police that "two guys ran off and left the stalled car. The of ficer released Blitz, a police dog. Blitz caught George Jones, 55, and hit him. Police said the dog would have caught the other man, too, but ho cut his foot and had to be rushed to the veterinarian. Jones was charged with armed robbery. In the papers, each student must explain in 1000-1500 words how the raw materials, energy, tech nology, resources, and other ele ments in Oregon would be suited to a new type of chemicai indus try. The contest is sponsored by the Chemical Engineers of Ore gon and all high school students who have studied or are studying science are eligible. A top prize of $100 will be given to the best paper, with two runncrsup receiving $75 and $50. The three winners will also receive an all-expense paid trip to Corvallis, where their papers will be read at the Third Joint Meeting of Chemical Engineers of Oregon and (lie Student Chap ter of American Institute of Chem ical Engineers on May 21. Officer Faces Bomb Queries SAN FRANCISCO (UPD-An Army captain who allegedly mail ed a bomb that exploded in the iost office at San Francisco In leiiinlional Airport was due to ar rive here late Saturday night. The captain was enroute tu Travis Air Force Base from Sai gon, from where the explosive was mailed. Postal authorities said tho officer mailed the ex plosive to his wife in Chicago. Defense attorney Fred Jensen entered motions for a directed verdict of acquittal and dismissal of the murder charge against Mrs Wallace.
