Newspaper Page TextStrike lone Achieving All Its Objectives By FRED DOWN IPI Sports Writer The evidence of the first five days of the major league base ball season indicates that the new strike zone rule is achieving borli objectives for which it was in stituted. The rule enlarging the size of the strike zone was designed to improve the effectiveness of pitch ers and to speed up games. The idea was that the pitchers were becoming homer-punchy and that long games were resulting in un favorable fan reaction. Statistics Rack Objectives The first five days of a six- Henley Tramples Mustang Nine The Henley Hornets, using 15 players and yet playing without five starters, slaughtered the Ma lin Mustangs at Malin Saturday afternoon, 22-10, in a non-conference game. It was the second straight vic tory for the Hornets. They beat Sacred Heart, 4-0, Thursday on a no-hillcr by Gary Durfee. Ran dy Lapo and Steve Rand, a catcher, combined for- a six- Gilchrist Garners Gilchrist's track team, one of the stronger Class B teams in the region, ran away from Chilo quin and Paisley teams at Gil christ in a triangular meet Satur day afternoon by compiling 9134 points to 4tiU for Chiloquin and 13 for Paisley. "We feel we have a real strong team here this year and figure to be among the top in the Klam ath County League." Coach Jer ry Bennett said. The Grizzlies won 10 events and tied for first in another. There were 14 events in the meet. . Jack Hazlewcod turned in a good half-mile time for the Griz lies with a clocking of 2:16. The Grizzlies were still a little tired because they just returned from the Hayward Relays in Eugene on Fridav. Thcv finished about 10th in the field of 35 there. Matt Koski took the broad lump for the Grizzlies with 19-1 leap. Dave Sporrer took the discus with a toss of 117-6. Lyncs won the 220-yard dash in 25.1 and tied Chiloquin's Al DeBortoli in the 100 at 11.1. He was also sec ond in the javelin behind Chjlo- quin's Tony Wilder who had a heave of 145-8V4. Lynes, Denny .Ipssud. Koski and Dan Hoff teamed up for a win in the 880 vard relay in a 1:44 clocking.' Huskies Top Chiloquin On No Hits The Merrill Huskies, behind the brilliant no-hit pitching perform ance of Dennis Berry, sneaked past the Chiloquin Panthers at Chiloquin Friday afternoon, 1-0. in a well-played game. Berry didn't allow a hit and his teammates got only four off loser Don Taylor. Berry walked only one and struck out 10 in the winning process. Taylor didn't walk any and whiffed four Husky batsmen. The Huskies scored their only and winning run in the sixth. Larry Connor led off with a sin gle and stole second. He took third on a fielder's choice and raced home after a sacrifice fly to left field bv Dale Kurtz. They have achieved one one-hitter, three two-hitters and two three-hitters. There have been only two three-hour or longer games .plaved in the National League and none in the American League. Tlie 1963 pattern of well-pitched briskly played games was con tinued in the only two games played on Good Friday the Kan sas City Athletics beating the Min hitter against the Mustangs. The Hornets scored four runs in each of the first two frames and one in the fifth for a 9-2 lead alter the Mustangs had marked up two in the first Malin, however, came back to take a 10-9 lead with four runs in the fourth and four in the sixth Henley bounced back with 13 runs in the iinai three innings for the victorv. Rand led the hit ting parade with a double and two singles in six trips for seven RBIs. Durfee got three hits in seven at-bats for four RBIs. They were the only two with over one hit. Garv Mapes and Lapo also hit doubles. Tom Brown doubled for Malin and tripled (or three RBIs. Aldinger and Randy Le Quieu also tripled. Reggie Le Quieu drove in three runs. Grayson, who in four years as head man of the Husky cagers had a record of 57 wins and 4!) defeats, was hired in 1959 to re place Tippy Dye. who resigned to take over the athletic directorship ut Wichita. This year. Grayson's Washing ton team tied for third in the Big Six conference after being in tne thick of the race for the title The Huskies finished the over-all season with a 13-13 mark to pre serve Grayson's record o( never having a losing season. His record (or 25 vears in high school and college coaching showed 461 wins and 136 losses. Grayson had been working on the last year of a four-year con tract amid reports of dissatisfac tion from , student and alumni groups. He was severely criti cized by the University of Wash ington Daily, the campus news-i paper, but the criticism ebbed when the Huskies came on strong during the season. Gravson began his coaching ca reer in the Oklahoma high school system and for three years was an assistant basketball coach at the University of Oklahoma.. He then moved to Idaho State Col- Icee where in lour seasons his trams won 69 games while losing but 17 and captured the confer ence title three seasons. Dick Farrell. who last Seplem ber dealt the Dodgers one of the crucial defeats of the NL season fireballed a four-hitter and struck out 11 to give the Colts their first win of the young season. Tommv Davis made three of the Dodger hits including a single that led to Los Angeles' 1-0 lead in the top of the ninth inning. I k, Pelican Jayvees Clobber Crater In Doubleheader The Klamath Union Jayvee baseball team swept a double header from Crater's JV nine at Wright Field Saturday afternoon, 10-0 and 11-3. The wins were the second and third in succession for the undefeated Pelicans. Max Cunningham, who pitched a no-hitter against Ashland'si JVs, set the Crater team down on two hits in the abbreviated five-innine first game and Jim Bridges and Jim Patzke com bincd to hurl a three-hitter at the iunior Comets in the second game.
