Novice Screen Writer
Wins Oscar First Try
NEW YORK (LTIi Abby Mann.just because they are unab'.e to
left television (or motion pictures,
and no one could be happier about
the change than the young script
writer himself.
The first time "out" in Holly
wood he won the 19til Academy
Award for his Judgment at Nu
remberg" screen play. This was
adapted from a script he wrote
for a television show which re
ceived scant critical attention
and therein lies one clue to his
preference for movie work.
"The media (television) is filled
with mediocre, Madison Avenue
mentality," he said in an inter
view. "It's not only the sponsors,
either. The producers and direc
tors both are at fault. The stand
aids on television are low."
Mann, 36, likes film work be
cause it gives him more freedom
and greater opportunity to pursue
his ambitions as a serious writer.
His subjects tend to be some
what controversial, and the rea
son for this can be understood by
a question which he asks himself
in evaluating a movie:
"Does the picture attack or ex
plain something that people are
not prepared to accept when they
come into the theater?
For example, he said, "In
'Judgement at Nuremberg' I was
trying to show that patriotism
an be evil,
Show Is Crucial
The word "show" is crucial to
an appreciation of Mann's style
and purpose, because he thinks it
is not enough "simply to SAY a
thing is bad.
His latest original script was for
"A Child is Waiting," a movie
about mentally retarded or "de
lective children in which some
popular notions about them
attacked.
Here he sought to "show" that
persons should not be rejected

Spoken 'Asides' Spark
Laughter At 'Interlude'

don't he deceived by a certain
comment you're bound to hear
from some who have seen the bril
liant revival of Eugene O'Neill's
"Strange Interlude" at the Hudson
Theater.
The comment has to do with
the spoken thoughts of the char
acters, liberally scattered through
the actual dialogue and express
ing the real feelings of the char
acters. The criticism is that this no
longer parks the wallop of nov
elty that it had .15 years ago in
the original production; that it
results in frequent audience laugh
ter. The only true criticism of the
device, which was just as perti
nent in 1028 as it is now. is that
there is too much use of it, and
that some of the expressed
thoughts were as naive then as
they are now.
Was Far Ahead
The fact is that O'Neill was so
far ahead of the times in 1928
that many of these miscalled
"asides" involved comment that
audiences of the day did not re
alize were designed to arouse sar
donic laughter. Which they net in
the present production because
audiences now recognize them for
what thev are.
But not only because the audi
ences are capable of this recogni
lion. It is also becaue the direc-

Slum Life Depicted
The book deals w ith slum life in
Mexico City.
"Eighty per cent of the world
lives that way," Mann said. "If
eighty per cent of the world lives
that way, why shouldn't we write
about it?
Mann blames some of the ills
of the movie industry in this coun
try on its failure to focus on mod
ern problems.
Mann, a bachelor who lives ii
Beverly Hills, Calif., also is work
ing on the screen plays for "The
Condemned of Altona," a play by
Jean-Paul Sartre set in post-Nazi
Germany, and Katherine Anne
Porter's novel, "Ship of Fools."
A native of Philadelphia, Mann
was reared in Pittsburgh, went to
Temple University for a year,
served a hitch with the Army in
World War II and then came to
New York (Greenwich Village
He enrolled at NYU on the GI
bill "but started cutting classes
more and more and dropped out
after one year."
Mann began working in televi
sion "eight or ten years ago" aft
er observing, as an unsuccessful
playwright, "I'm going to have
to make a living somehow."
"It's very difficult for a youn
playwright," he said. "Even when
your play is produced, you get
practically nothing for it.
"Now I get $200,000 a screen
play." That was not true of the orig
inal production by the Theater
Guild, with Lynn Fontanne as
slar, expert though it was in all
respects.
There Is, for example, instant
recognition today of the humor
cruel but nonetheless humor in
the spoken thoughts of the Char
les Marsden character, a male
ruined for normal sexual relation
shipnot even a "normal" homo
sexualby a mother complex.
And at this point, it should be
recorded that William Prince
'yes. television's "Young Doctor
Malone") is giving in the role of
Marsden one of the most sensitive
and effective performances in re
cent memory. Magnificent, touch
ing work. ,
Almost Steals Play
In fact. Prince almost steals
the play from Geraldine Page, ex
cellent as she is in the pivotal
role of Nina Leeds, the Freudian
heroine whose search for happi
ness for herself and others af
fects the lives of five men over
a 25-year period with generally
unhappy results. Aliss Page is
merely at her all-time best.
But all in the cast are wonder
ul Ben Gazarra. Franchot Tone,
Betty Field. Pat Hmgle. Jane
Fonda. Geoffrey Home and Rich
ard Thomas.

In High-Living Class

Jones, star ' ot the "Ensign I
O'Toole" scries, is the head of
one Jones family that no one need
be concerned about keeping up
with.
When it comes to off-screen
glamour and high living he is a
bust.
There are plumbers and insur
ance adjusters who live on grand
er scales man tne nanusome
young star.
Unlike many a status-seeking
performer, Jones lives in an un
fashionable suburb of Los Angeles
in a three-bedroom stucco house
without a swimming pool. His
neighbors are everyday, hard
working middle class citizens. And
that's the way Jones likes it.
But it does shake you up to
think that here is a man who
can afford to reside in Bel-Air or
Beverly Hills, yet lives in a home
that cost considerably less than
$50,000 less than some stars in
similar financial circumstances
pay for servants in a year's time.
A comfortable, seemingly un
complicated guy, Jones leads as
normal a private life as you and
I.
He and ' his wife, Mae, were
married in 1954 and are the par
ents of two daughters, Carol Eliz
abeth, 7, and Deanna Mae, 5, who
enchant and dominate their fa
ther.
"When I come home at night 1
lie flat on the living room floor
for about 15 minutes to relax,"
Jones savs. "and the girls crawl
all over me telling me the news
ot their dav. ' .
Sounds normal so far, h u t
Jones does have a streak of ec
centricity about him. He wouldn't
be an actor if he didn't.
When he lies on the living room
floor it's pretty uncomfortable
There isn't a rug or a stick of
furniture in the room. His explana
tion for this is that the family
spends most of its time in the
den.
"Sure we can afford to furnish
the living room, only we can't
make up our minds about how to
furnish it. It's been this way for
vears. Once we decided to fill it
with antiques, then changed ourl
minds in favor of contemporary
stuff. After that we thought we'd
buy our paintings first and then
get suitable furniture."
That was more than a year ago.
There are t w o paintings
abstracts on the walls but still
no chairs, tables or sofas.
The previous owner of the house
carved a huge hole in the wall
lo hold a fancy aquarium, but
Jones isn't particularly fond of
fish and left the hole gaping.
Jones and a friend built a bar
to hide the excavation, but it
wasn't high enough. He solved the
problem recently by filling the
hole with a fti-fi set. which still
leaves a lot to be desired from an
esthetic standpoint.
Jones is so much like the guy
next door that he isn't considered
much of a celebrity in the neigh
borhood. And he has common,
everyday problems, loo. One of
which is his weight.
He's skinny.
He weighs 157 pounds and would
like to gain another 10. But
high metabolism and tremendous
such effectiveness in this partic
ular department.
Because of its four-and-a-half-
hour performance length, to
which a one-hour intermission for
dinner is added at the halfway
point . the play is performed only
six times a week, on cveninps at
6 o'clock, Monday through Satur-

"Candy, cookies, soup, fruit
juices. Anything 1 can g e t my
hands on. But it doesn't do any
good. I even lift weights and drink
tiger's milk and swallow mult:
vitamins. Still no good.
"My doctor said I could stay in
bed the test of my life and eat
2i hours a day and still not gain
a pound.
The high-strung Jones boy
should take several weeks off for
a vacation. But this spring he will
jump right into a new movie

NBC-TV series.

just in time for him to hustle
right hack to Four Star studios
and climb back into his ensign's
uniform.

Inasmuch as Jones doesn't live
like a star the question naturally
arises as to what he does w ith his
money. Answer: "I put it in the
bank and I buy stocks. There
may come a time when I will be
able to splurge on a nice big
home, but I'm trying, to keep my
balance and my outlook on life In
proper perspective.
Sometimes it s not an easy
thing to do.

NEW YORK (UPI) - Dorothy
Ijoudon's work on Garry Moore's
CBS hour this season has won her
a regular berth for HtGS-M. The
singing comedienne will appear in
13 of the first 26 shows of next
season.
The second batch of the "Biog
raphy" syndicated series of Of
ficial Films, produced by David
L Wolper and narrated' by Mike
Wallace, will include half-hour
programs dealing with Pope Pius
XII, Konrad Adenauer, Fidel Cas
tro, Eomon dc Valcra, Wendell
Willkie, Grace Kelly, Babe Did-
rickson and Princess Margaret
Singer Andy Williams will be
back on the NBC network next
season with a one-hour show, but
not as a weekly feature. He will
do 12 variety shows, lo be aired
on various Tuesday nights, Octo
ber through May.
ABC has reserved 9:30-10 p.m
Fridays for a new situation com
edy series called "The Farmer's
Daughter" starring Inger Stevens
It will reach the air next fall
