The bill would transfer law enforcement duties to the state police. The hearing brought a clash between a former Lane County sheriff and a former police offi cer, now both legislators. - Rep. Eugene Hulett, D Eugene, the former policeman, stressed a need for professional law enforce ment by qualified personnel. H. follmann. Dr. L. J. Severson, Dr. E. H. Robinson and Dr. T. S. Fu- Jita. The disease, called pheochromn- cytoma, stems from a hormone- producing tumor of .the adrenal glands. ' The core of the gland over grows and produces large amounts of adrenalin and noradre- nalin hormones which increase blood pressure. . Physiological and psychological symptoms of hypertension, severe anxiety, trcmulousncss, palpita tion, headache, nausea, chest pains and profuse perspiration are the result. The tumor ollen can be re moved surgically. The Oregon doctors developed a simple test to show the pres ence of the tumor by registering the concentration of vanilandelic acid, or VMA. in urine. , The test does not apply to hy pertension from other causes, the Society said. IBLM Totals West Oregon Timber Sales PORTLAND UPI - The fed eral Bureau of Land Management sold 95.166.900 board feet of tim ber in Western Oregon for $2.8119.- 824 during the month of February. BLM said the timber was lo cated on 107 separate tracts. Between July 1 of last year and March 1 of this year BLM sales in Western Oregon totaled about $15 million. Travis M. FOREIGN NEWS COMMENTARY De Gaulle Ignores East-West Talks PARIS il'Pli Resumption of L'nited Stated-Soviet talks on Ber lin in Washington finds French President Charles de Gaulle once again in his now familiar odd-man-out role. France is taking no part in the Italks. De Gaulle is not even an interested spectator. He simply is ignoring them. That has been De Gaulle's pos ture for at leat 18 months where East-West talks with the Soviets are concerned. There is no sign of his changing in the near lu-ture. Since the end of 1961 De Gaulle has refused any part in negotia tions with the Russians. His hostility even to diplomatic "probing" on Berlin blew up into a crisis in the North Atlantic Council in December. 1961. Compromise Arranged It was settled only by a com promise arrangement that the L'nited Stales and Great Britain would go on talking with the Rus sians and that France, though disapproving, would not veto the talks, but simply would take no part. De Gaulle has taken the same stand on disarmament and nuclear test ban negotiations. He has boy cotted, even ignored them. But he lias not sought actively to block them. The stubborn old French leader never has gone for the "talk rath er than war" argument. To begin with, he is dimly con vinced tile Russians will not at-' tack the West in Europe and thus provoke a nuclear shuudoun with the United States. Relieves Khrushchev Mulling He believes the periodic Berlin crises touched off by Soviet Pre mier Nikila Khrushchev are large ly bluff. He believes Khrushchev is socking to tlireaten and scare the West out of Berlin but would not risk use of force. De Gaulle does not rule out East West talks for good. He believes a time will come when the Russians will be ready (or genuine negotiations without threats, bluff or duress about their relations on a world-wide basis with the West. But that time may he a decade or more away, De Gaulle thinks. Hospital Problems Laid To Hatfield Court Eyes Stock Sale . The SEC complaint asked that the corporation and , Richard C. Van Houlen II. its executive vice president, appear. It asked a tem porary restraining order and ap pointment of a receiver. The complaint alleged the com pany was In violation of the SEC's so-called net capital rule by per p mining its aggregate indebtedness to exceed 2.000 per cent of its capital while acting as a secur ities broker-dealer. It claimed the firm lacked sufficient funds to meet its obligations. In an affidavit, John R. Mc Neall, SEC investigator from Se attle, listed the firm's assets as of March 15 at $11,697 and liabil ities at $20,588. Mark Hatfield was accused Wednesday of ordering "forced savings ... at the Oregon State Mental Hospital to a point where patients are ac tually dying. . ."
