Paradoxically, Stack excelled at everything he did during World War II he served four years in the Navy, attaining the rank of lieutenant except the thing that mattered most, his acting career. He appeared in dozens of pic tures, usually in secondary roles, gaining his greatest distinction for giving Deanna Durbin her first screen kiss in ' First Love, Stack frequently was the "nice, clean-cut kid" in the background His youthful appearance, as much as anything else, kepi producers from taking him seriously as a dramatic actor. Stars On TV It remained for "The Untouch ables," when Stack was pushing 40, to catapult him to "overnight" stardom. When an actor makes the grade after long struggle and rebuffs from producers and directors it is not unusual for him to vent his rancor on the individuals wno i closed their doors to him. I Not Bob Stack. j He has formed his own produc-! tion company for feature films and, recently starred in "The Caretak I ers." He is sought out by the same men who once brushed him aside. I Stack smiles at the fates which almost blocked his appearance on video in the role of Ness, the un touchable. Originally it was a two-part spe cial and was to have starred an other, and better known, actor than himself. The star refused the role and Stack accepted. Actors Told 'Meet Public' HOLLYWOOD (UPI) Michael Dante, a former professional ath lete who toured with baseball teams, believes actors should also go on the road with their pictures. "I figure pictures are like base ball," Dante said. "You play to win and you're part of a team." Dante was a professional ball player for five years before an attack of bursitis ended his career. Dante recently completed a co starring role in "Operation Bi kini" in which he plays a U.S. Navy submarine officer. With the picture finished, he has offered a knowledge of the road to his pro ducers, certain that personal ap pearances will boost box office re ceipts. "I think one of the answers would be for actors to go out and meet the people who buy movie tickets," he said. "I've done it before, not often, but it's been effective. When we travel we're working to build a specific picture along with our own careers." Dante, a tall, handsome Italian American, said the loyalty of mov ie fans is cemented with a per sonal handshake from an actor. "Audiences want to meet you in person," he said. "They will ask all about their lavorite stars. People look at an actor making a personal appearance in their town and say. "He's a regular guy. He came here to meet us." Movie fans want to know if their favorite star is the nice guy that he is on the screen, or if an ac tress is really so pretty offscreen."
