The Honkers downed the Eagles! who had previously beaten them by a point in Eagle Point and gained a record of 6-2. The Honk ers played next to last place Rogue River Saturday night while the Eagles had the dubious task of attempting to knock the state's top ranked Henley Hornets from their lofty perch to get back into the race. The Honkers, who gave the Hor nets all they wanted last week before losing in an overtime pe riod by two points, led the Eagles all the way. Round Up whipied Tulelake. 89 50, Merrill stopped Chiloqum, ftl 50, and Rly beat Klamath Gas in an overtime, 56-54, in the other three contests. Colile led Kingsley with 24 points and Sutherland had 21. DcMerlc Lytle led the Ducks with 2D points before fouling out late in the game. Bob David had 1! The tournament semilinals and finals are slated today. creased that margin by six more markers in the second period to lead at the rest period, 29-22. Each team matched each other point for point in the third frame and the Honkers outscored the Eagles in the fourth, 17-16 for the victory. Four Honkers hit in double fig ures with Larry Samples lead ing the parade with 16 points, 10 of which came from the char ity line in 11 attempts. Dan Leahy was second with 14 markers, six from the line. Dennis Warren chipped in with 12 and Fred Wil liams with 10. The Eagles had their big guns muffled from their usual loud roars. The league's second lead ing scorer, Charles Pomeroy, who sports a 20-point average, was held to 13 is was Richard Short who is in the top five scoring col umn. John Linder led the Eagles with 15 points. Each team hit for 21 baskets but the Honkers took advantage at the charity line tor good per centage in hitting 21 of 35 for 60 per cent. Eagle Point hit on only 13 of 24 for .542 per cent. The Eagles had 19 fouls to 15 for the Honkers. The Honkers can move into sec ond place Saturday night if the games go according to the chart form. The Honkers should han dle Rogue River and Henley should measure Eagle Point w hich would give the Honkers undisput ed second position. So the teams from the Eastern half of the league are doing fine in the Rogue 1-eague. Chiloquin Remains Leader in Over Bonanza CHILOQUIN (Special) - The league-leading Chiloquin Panthers, although frightened some by the pesky Bonanza Antlers Friday night, continued to win in the Klamath County League as they downed the Antlers with a fourth quarter splurge, 64-58, to remain unbeaten in league compoitition. But things could gel even hotter for the leaders. They met the Antlers again Saturday night and Merrill Subdues Bly's Bobcats MERRILL iSpeciali-The Mcr- rill Huskies remained in the run ning for the Klamath County League bunting here Friday night by trouncing the Bly Bobcats, 48- 26. The same two clubs met Sat urday night in Bly for a re match. The Huskies led all the way after a slow first quarter which found the Huskies commanding a 9-5 lead. They lipped that mar gin in the second with a 14-point period for a 23-11 half time lead. They continued to mount the margin in the last two frames while a good defense kept the Bobcats at bay. Bly played ball control in the first period which kept the score down marginally hut the Huskies ran out of that style in the sec ond period. Merrill was led by Dale Kurtz who had his best night of the season with 17 points. He was the only Husky in double figures. Dave Hill had nine and Ken Smith seven. The Bobcats had no one in the double figure column. Jack Pati- ke led the visitors with seven points while Merle Clemens had six. The w in left the second place Huskies' with a 6-2 league record behind Chiloquin's ft-0 mark. The Bobcats are now 2-6 on the league record side. Mustangs Win First Loop Tilt MALIN (Special i The Malin Mustangs won their first confer' ence basketball game here Fri day night when they got red-hot and downed the Gilchrist Griz zlies, 74-59, in a Klamath County League game. II was the Inst league win for the Mustangs and only the second win of the season for them They got double figure scoring from four starters with Tom To- fell leading the scoring parade with 22 points. Randy LcQuieu chipped in with 19 while Tom Brown had 18 and Sherm, Kalina 11. Dave Sporrer had 16 and Dan Hoff 14 for the losers. The win gave the Mustangs 1-7 record in league play and left the stunned Grizzlies with t 3-5 mark for league competition. The Panthers jumped off quick in the first quarter and were hot as Ihey doubled the score of the Antlers to take a 22-11 first pe riod lead. But the Antlers fought back and cut the margin to 10 at the intermission, 35-25. Bonanza came roaring back in the third period to rip the nets for 20 points while holding the Panthers to 11 to slice the margin to one point going into the fourth period. 46-45. The game was tied up at 40-40 once but the Panthers hung on. They outscored the Ant lers in Ihe final period to win the game, 18-13. The game was close until the Panthers pulled nut to a comfortable margin with about three minutes to play. Four of the five Panthers hit in double figures. Tony Wilder and tony DiUlio each hit for 16 points while Al DeBortoli and Don Tay lor each netted 12 points. Greg Harris, the fifth starter, hit for eight. I'he Hornets, possibly thintiing ahead to Saturday night and the meeting with the defending cham pion Eagle Point Eagles, got some help from rival Lakeview when the Honkers pasted the Ea gles in Lakeview. 63-55. The Hornets finally managed to get 10 points in the third period thanks to Allbritton's five. Meanwhile, the Chieftains were hitting for 15 and the Hornets took a 50-38 lead into the fourth period when they started hitting Gooding for points under the bucket. Gooding finished with 27 points and Beymer with 24. Allbrit ton closed out the double figure scoring w ith 11. Salter had 17 and Davidson 13 for the losers.
