PAGE 4 B HERALD AND NEWS, Klamath Jails, Or. Sunday, February , 19M BOWING WITH DADOADA Til By BARBARA BAUMGARDNER V IASIN 10WLJRS LtACUI Archery can be fun. relaxing challenging, and intcrcstinc, but bomotimes tedious and when Hunk of tli? tension Uial those lo team.s, VI'W and Farmers Lumber were under last Wedncs- ilijy night, 1 imagine the latter weird' describes archery for those i rx'oplc right now. As I per dieted last week, it was a close match. At the half-way point VKW was ahead by 25 points But at the final target, the score was Ml for VFW and t52 for Farmers Lumber. So at the half way mark in this year's archery league, Vrw look a loss by 1! ipoints and now four teams are lied for first place, They are VI'W, Fat mors Lumber, A 1 1 a Snorts Center, and East Side Elec trie. Tlicy each have six wins and one los. Also laking a loss and one that I am very sorry to hear about was Jack Ly.ns. He was the only archer still In the running for Ihe aluminum arrows to be given for an archer improving his score every week and last week Jack's score dropped. Golly, Jack, 1 hope I didn't jinx you by putting your name in the paper last week. Rut I do have good news. Dale Baxter gets a great deal of plea- Mire out of keeping tilings inter esting and promoting competition so lie lias put up that half doz en aluminum arrows for another prize. It will be given to the archer who can nutshoot his own high score for Uie next six weeks of league competition. Here is how it will work: Check the record book and find the highest score you have shot all season in league shooting. Then for the next six weeks, if you can top that score, that is, shoot a score belter lhan your record high score, you will win thai pn,e. If your high score for the year is 200, you must shoot over Jim fur the next six weeks. It is worth a try, isn'l it? I know 1 am going to try! Al this half way mark in the arcliery league. I nth team and individual scores are getting close. Five teams hasp, liecn shooting .(cores between Mil and IVUt. As lor the individuals, Cordon Lund was high man last week with 2.!lt hut boating Hob Jones by only two poinls. High woman was. Audrey Baxter with a 14.) and she beat me by only throe points and Audrey Irunrl followed closely with a I.'i2. This kind of compeli- linn keeps a person on his toes, Jorsn't it? Arrows may lie wooden, glass or aluminum. No special size or weight of bow is required. .Starting position is at 17 yards. Four arrows arc shot at an eight- inch targcl; when the entire line up has shot the four arrows, Ihev lay down their bows and iwalk forward to tlicir targel, count up their score, wrile it down, and pull their arrows. Then they all go togclhcr lo the next shooting lsitio n and repeat this same procedure. Each target has a while ring which counts as a bullseyc or five points. In llus while ring is a Wack spot but it is only an aim ing point and doesn't count extra nil. Around the while ring is a black ring and if an arrow strikes in this ring, it counts three points. Therefore, all four arrows in the while ring would mint 20 and four arrows tn the black outside ring would count 12. Often, an archer will land some of the arrows in Ihe black and some in the white so it is necessary to add the threes and fives tn arrive at a score for that target. If a line is broken be tween Uie black and white rings, the shooter receives the higher score. Shooting four arrows al the sev en positions and using six and eight-inch targets is called a flint round and has a possible score of 140. Each team shoots two flint rounds during a league shoot and therefore each archer has a possi bilily of 240 points. 'Hie distances shot arc I. 17 yards at an eight-inch lar ge!. 2. 20 feet al a six-inch target .1. 20 yards at an eight-inch tar gel. 4. 14 yards al a six . inch tar gel. 5. 15 j arils at an eight-inch tar get. fi. 10 yards al a six-inch larget. 7. I arrow at 20 yards, I ar row at 1R yards, 1 arrow al ir yards and the last arrow at 14 yards, all at the eight-inch lar get. This last position is called "the walk-up. If you have a clear distance ol yards in your Hack yard, you can set up a flint round easily with a couple hale of straw and one six-inch and one eight-inch target. Drive stakes in the ground for your distances and you're all set to go. And you'll have fun. it ? Ml a 37 4 Os Greese Monkey! Nor could I tell you the tremendous feel ing of excitement thjt prevails as you participate in such an event I think excitement is the right word to describe what you feel when you are bowling wilh the world's best bowlers. There was no pressure until the last day 1 none that you are aware ot when you're far behind and then there is always an element of des Deration or you just resign your self to being behind. I think I felt keenly disap pointed not because of my own ex pectations. I carried the good wishes of many enthusiastic bowl ing fans from Klamath Kails and all of Southern Oregon. It is for them that I feel greatly disap pointed. For me, the disappoint ment was tempered by Uie enjoy-. ment of one of the greatest events in bowling. No description can jus tify it.- And the end result of watching it on television is vir tually a crime. The cable could not justify it despite Uie fact that the format had been adopted as a concession to television. There was obvious tension on Weber c Dick and Wclu ( Billy as they bowled for the difference $8,000. But neither bowled as ell or as confidently as he had during the rest of the tournament. The television announcer failed to make reference to third through ninth in the standings. They were still on the lanes as he was award ing trophies and cash to the cham pions. Kor the people who watched at home, it must have been a dis appointment instead of a fitting climax lo 10 days of torrid bowl ing bv the best in the nation. Hut regardless of the outcome of the one final match shown on TV, the 'in person" spectator saw one of the greatest bowling shows in Ihe world. Kvery day, in every quad, there would be at least four games in each individual game of Ihe series over 2"0! Those of us who were non-pro fessional picked M-6 as the squad to watch. Gl or FHA financing. Lenning to mention a few of the better known professionals. Of the 2K8 bowlers in the finals of the All-Star, 180 were members of the PBA or had bowled in sanctioned PBA events. Looking back, it is easy to see what I believe was a key to my failure to score better. That first word is it looking. I was doing lot of looking, even when awaiting my turn on the lanes. And it's a well known fact that watching other people's scores will rot help your game. It's a difficult thing to avoid when there are so many good bowlers rolling at the same time. And I could not avoid it. I think I'm able to sort out this one thing in 'particular be cause I remember, after doing so badly on the first day, I, told my self I had to get my mind on w hat was doing. And recalling my practice sessions where I prac ticed against scores of the profes sionals in the world tournament, I decided to watch one man. I chose Kred Lenning who was di- rectly on my left.
