Ontario (UPli An American hunter said today thai he and his Indian guide lived on raw venison and swamp grass for 10 days while .they were lost in the northern Ontario bush. Elwyn Myers, 20. Pentuater, Mich., and guide Thomas Strong. 35, became lost during a moose hunting expedition Oct. 27. They were found by a ground search party Monday and brought to a hospital here. Doctors today described Myers' condition as good, but said the guide was suffering from exposure and was in serious condition. From his bedside at Dryden Hospital the thin, bearded hunter, who lost 25 pounds, told of their ordeal. The pair was flown into Portal Lake Oct. 27 for a three-day hunt. When the plane returned to pick them up Oct. 30 there was no sign of them, and the following day ground and airborne search par ties began to look for them. "We got lost on the first day and we also ran out of matches," Myers said. "On the second day we shot a deer and we carried the front quarter of the animal wherever we went. Every night we built a lean-to to shield us from the wind. For food we ate raw meat and swamp grass. One day both Tom and I fell into a swamp and I thought we would freeze to death." Myers said they were unable to find their way back to the camp because they had no compass and they could not guide themselves by the sun because the sky was cloudy all the time. . "We kept on going around in circles. We'd walk and walk, and then we would all of a sudden come on a spot where we had been the previous day," he said. Hodges Doubfs Kennedy Drive For Tariff Cuf WASHINGTON (AP)-Secretary of Commerce Luther H. Hodges cast doubt today on the possibil ity that President Kennedy will launch a drive in the 1962 session of Congress for broad new author ity to reduce tariffs. Hodges told a news conference that the proposal, advanced pub licly by Undersecretary of, State George W. Ball, is a "long-range program which we ought to study and look at." Hodges declined several oppor tunities raised by reporters to declare himself for or against the major overhaul of the Trade Agreements Act which many ad ministration officials favor. He told the opening meeting of the 52nd convention of the Pa cific Logging Conference that dur ing World War II the industry lived "pretty high on the hog," but he suggested that the pace slackened because management overlooked its personnel relations. "If we are to retain our right ful place again," he said, "we must have a team and encourage teamwork" to prevent industry workers from "losing their initiative." He said that too many workers "don't want to just plain work and I feel it is up to us to provide the encouragement and incentive needed." "The message we want to get over is that emplove and employ er are on the same team. Ann we are competing with other building material industries, not with each other. ' He also urged a stronger public relations program for the lumber industry in order to battle against lax problems and other concerns of the forest industries.
