Church Refuses Contributions ABERDEEN. S D. (AP)-A Methodist bishop is protesting the action of a South Dakota judge who recently ordered a group of game law violators to make con tributions to their churches in lieu of paying fines. The case involved pheasant hunters appearing before Judge Paul F. Burke at Miller, S. D "A church cannot properly use the power of a government agen cy to collect funds for its sup port, Bishop Edwin R. Garrison, Aberdeen, said Friday. Bishop Garrison said he was advising church treasurers under his jurisdiction to return any such contributions. The key to survival is under- standing the hazards, the effects of nuclear weapons, so you can make intelligent decisions and take intelligent action. The smart man has 100 times more chance than the man who doesn't know what to expect or to do. Ignorance can kill, just as it kills the little child who runs in front of an automobile. You can save your life easily. You can easily lose it. Do you know, for example, that Even if a bomb exploded near by, you would have an hour or longer to take or prepare shelter before the fallout arrived? Forty-eight hours after radioac tive fallout comes down, it is only 1 per cent as "hot" or dangerous as when it fell? Fallout is one of the biggest po tential killers in nuclear weapons? By this fallout, I don't mean the relatively small amount com ing from high air bursts of nu clear tests. I mean the thousands of tons of radioactive dirt and materials vaporized and made radioactive by a great burst near or on the ground. This fallout behaves like ordi nary dust, except it is hot. Trotsky's Widow Asks 'New Look' PARIS (API Leon Trotsky'S widow has written lb Soviet au thorities asking for a new look at Trotsky's trial and assassina tion in the light of denunciations of Stalin at the recent Soviet Communist party congress. The letter, disclosed today by the international secretariat of the Fourth Internationale, said in part: 'I ask that you totally and publicly revise the Moscow trial in which the chief accused were Leon Trotsky and my son Leon Sedoff. Fallout will not mean the end of all life on earth, even if hun dreds of bombs were exploded. All these arc facts. They and other facts answer "Yes" to the many questions people are asking, which all add up to this: "Is there really anything we can do?" f cannot tell you there is a simple, cheap way to protect your self if you are in the very center of a target when it receives a direct hit. But millions of us will not be there. And many thousands near the center of destruction could sur vive, with knowledge and protec tion. Your First Move First, let us assume you arc caught in the most defenseless po sition out in the open, with no! warning an attack is coming. The first sign is a tremendous i light, thousands of times brighter than the sun or a flash of light ning. There s no mistaking what it is. If you sense it, don't look at it. It could blind you. Throw yourself instantly to the! ground, and preferably behind; some protection, such as a build ing, the curb of a street, a cul vert, even a tree, anything to put protection between you and thai flash. Lie as flat as you can. With the light, the first effect is prompt or instant radiation from the nuclear burst. It is X-rays and neutrons flying out in straight lines in all directions from the burst. This is not fallout. The X rays and gamma rays travel about 1,000 yards at most, then disap pear. With this radiation, at the same1 speed comes heat. The heat from a 20 megaton bomb might cause second degree burns at a distance up to 25 miles, unless you were protected. A hole in the ground could save you from much or all harm from the radiation and heat. Thousands of Japanese in Hiroshima or Nag asaki would have survived had they known this in time. Then, travelling at the speed of sound, comes the blast effect, mane all the worse because it picks up all kinds of objects and hurls them about like missiles. Hiding, making yourself small increases chance of survival. The chances improve the farther you happen to be from the bomb cen ter. Survive this, and you have prob ably an hour before fallout ar rives. Why? Because it consists of the nuclear ashes or coals from the burst, and sucked-up mate rial. And it shoots up to 20 to 25 miles high, and has all that distance to fall back to earth CUBAN ACTOR DIES MIAMI, Fla. Unemployed Total Down WASHINGTON (AP) Unem ployment dropped in October be low 4 million for the first time in a year but the Labor Department says the decline was only sea sonal. Department officials said Uie jobless total could bound back up above 5 million this winter. Unemployment dipped 151,000 from September to 3,934.000, while employment rose by 786,000 to 67,824,000, a record for the month. The dent in unemployment an nounced Friday was expected. Nuclear Sub Goes To Post PASCAGOULA. Miss. (API - The USS Snook, the Navy's 21st nuclear-powered submarine, will leave Pascagoula Monday for its first assignment with the Pacific Fleet. The Navy said Friday the Snook will go first to Key West, Fla., to pick up supplies and then depart for San Diego, Calif., its new home port.
