A Medford victory will result in a three-way tie between Medford, Grants Pass and Klamath Union and w ill necessitate a drawing of straws to determine the team to enter the playoffs. LA Jets Win Home Opener LOS ANGELES (APl-The Los Angeles Jets made their Ameri can Basketball League home de but with a 119-116 victory over the Chicago Majors Monday night. 'It was a mighty fine home coming. I think, said player coach Bill Sharman, for years a star with the Boston Celtics of the rival National Basketball Associa tion. There were seven 3-point field goals scored from beyond the 25- foot circle under the new ABL scoring rule. Kclley Coleman of the Majors scored two of them. Sharman connected on a 40-foot set shot that put the Jets ahead 61-59 at halftime, and they never trailed after that, although the Majjors tied the count at 104-104. Coleman was the game's high scorer with 35 points. Irish Boss Urges To 'Play By OSCAR FRALEY NEW YORK (UPD - Notre Dame dared Army today to come out and play with the big boys. The Cadets ended their long and storied football series with the Fight'ng Irish as an annual event after the 1947 game. The excuse was that It was "getting out of hand." It was another way, of saying that Notre Dame's personnel was loo tough. Since then, Army's schedule has been softened with so many breathers it has raised a ty phoon of criticism. The future generals were called upon to molest such juggernauts of the gridiron as VPI (40 to 0); David son (47-71; New Mexico (51-0); Citadel (27-6); Furman (41-0) and 81-0; Buffalo (37-0; Villanova (54-01 and Idaho (51-7). Nicely spaced in the annual lineup of patsies were a smatter ing of respectable opponents and, through some devious commando operations, Notre Dame finally got back on the Army slate with home-and-home now-and-then arrangement. Asks Annual Battle They met this way in 1957 and 1958, Notre Dame winning 23-21 at Philadelphia and then losing 14-2 at South Bend. Other future games are scheduled for home- Sophs In Scramble For Big Five Lead SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The Big Five individual football sla tislics are turning into a three- way sophomore scramble. UCLA sophomore tailback Mike Haffner Is the conference's lead ing rusher with 378 yards in 66 carries, a 5.7 average. Southern California sophomore quarterback Pete Beathard is the AAWU's leading passer with 32 completions in 56 attempts for 394 yards. Beathard s yearling teammate, Hal Bedsole, is the leading re ceiver with 21 catches for 411 yards and five touchdowns, which also makes him second in scoring with 30 points. Haffner is pushing USC quarter back Bill Nelsen for the total of fense leadership. Nelsen has to taled 574 yards in 126 plays, Haffner 509 yards in 88 plays. Nelsen Is second in passing al though his 543 yards passed Is more than Bcathard's 394. But the FOOTBALL NEW YORK Michigan State again was voted No. 1 team in nation in AP's college football poll. Kuharich also contended that the feeling Army can't compete against Notre Dame personnel is wrong. Game Always Competitive "This game always was com petitive," he insisted. "It was one of those inspirational games where anything could happen. I played against Army three times. There was one tie and we won another 7-0. Those can't be con sidered runaways." Indications were that maybe Army, too, as well as lis fans, Trojan sophomore has a better completion average, .571 to Nel- sen's .476 ( 30 - 63). Each has thrown for three touchdowns. The Individual scoring leader is UCLA's other tailback Bob Smith. He's scored 47 points on six touch downs, six one-point conversions, one two-point conversion and one field goal. Smith was done out of another category leadership when the con ference based its punting statis tics on six kicks or more. Smith had led for four weeks with one 50-yard kick. Now his UCLA teammate Keith Jensen, has moved officially into the top spot with a 38.5 average off 31 kicks. Southern Cal's Ernie Jones is second with 2136.7. Smith, however, remains in the rushing race, trailing only Haff ner. Bobby has gained 361 yards 95 carries, a 3.8 average. George Honore of Stanford Is sec ond in pass catching with 20, good for 206 yards but no touchdowns.
