V "Who Said The Catholic k Church Never Changes?" Bill remembered when Pope Pius XII changed the law to permit the drinking of water before Holy Communion. t "How about that?" he asked his Catholic friend, Joe. "And look at the changes the Church makes in the requirements of fast and ab stinence, and the rules for Lent. And the Pope has changed the hours for Mass, to mention just one other change! What do you mean, the Catholic Church is the same everywhere and never changes its laws?" An informed Catholic, of course, could have told Bill that certain laws of the Catholic -Church have been undergoing changes all the way back to apos tolic times. The Canon Law of the Church, for example, consists of more than 2,400 canons which have evolved through many . changes into the form in which they are promulgated today. But there are two kinds of laws upon which the doctrine of the Church is founded, and which are never changed. One is the natural law; the other the positive divine law. They are in one sense (he basic laws of the Church. But in their primary and larger way they are the laws of Cod, which the Church obviously has no au thority to change. The Church can and does promulgate them; but she never amends or alters them. The natural moral laws, of course, are those which God has made evident to the reason and intelligence of man... man shall adore God, shall honor his par ents, shall not kill, or lie, or steal. ..When man's conscience failed its obligation to observe these laws, God put them into words through the Commandments and through the ministry of His Son, Jesus. To proclaim these laws again SUPREME COUNCIL E4IUGHTS of COLUR1DUS RELIGIOUS INFORMATION BUREAU and again, and to urge man's com pliance with them, is a proper function of the Church. But she cannot amend or alter them in any way. This is also true of the divine laws enunciated by Our Lord, which the Church, is commis sioned to proclaim but not to change. In authorizing the Church to dispense the Sacraments, Jesus did not specify the exact occasions or conditions of fulfillment. Thus, when the Church prescribes such occasions or conditions and later changes them, she is not changing the divine law itself. Spread over the face of the earth... with her people living under a variety of political, social and economic conditions . . . the Church must adapt her regula tions to varying needs. But in the basic laws of the Church ... in the essentials of God's truths... she remains changeless and unchang ing down the centuries of time. Sift 2 tablespoons sugar, V teaspoon ground cinnamon, teaspoon ground ginger, and Vs teaspoon ground clove with flour and salt Substitute orange juice for cold water. Chaos Pastry for 1-Crust PM Follow recipe for basic pastry I; cut in Vi cup (2 oz.) grated Cheddar cheese with the shortening. rtoMvd Oat Pastry for 1 -Crust Pis Follow recipe for basic pastry I. Mix Vz cup uncooked rolled oats with the flour. Increase shortening to cup. Bake at 400F 15 min., or until crust is lightly browned. Nut Pastry for 1 -Crust Pio Follow recipe for basic pastry. Roll out dough between two 12-in. squares of waxed paper into a round about V in. thick. Peel off top piece of paper and sprinkle dough with 2 tablespoons chopped nuts, leaving a 1-in. border plain. Prick generously with a fork. Bake at 450 F 8 to 9 min., or until pastry is lightly browned. Almond Crunch Pi COWVIMIIWCt FOOD tICIM TO PREPARE: 40 MIN. TO CHILL: 2 HRS. (allow time for cooling) Toasted almond pastry for a 9-in. pie VS pkg. chocolate pudding and pie filling mix 1 V traspoona instant coffee 1 cup milk !-$ teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup chilled whipping cream 2 tablespoons sifted confectioners' sugar 1 pkg. lemon chiffon pie filling mix 14 cup chopped toasted almonds. 16 toasted almond halves 1. Prepare, bake, and cool almond pastry. 2. In a saucepan combine the chocolate pudding mix and the instant coffee. Blend in the milk and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture comes to a full boil. Remove from heat 3. Blend in the extract Cool; stir once or twice. Turn into pastry and spread evenly. 4. Using chilled bowl and beater, beat the whipping cream until of medium consist ency (piles softly). With a final few strokes, blend in confectioners' sugar. 5. Prepare the lemon chiffon pie filling mix according to directions on package. Gently fold half (about 1 cup) of the whipped cream into the chiffon pie filling. When just blended, mix in the chopped almonds. 6. Carefully turn the mixture over the chocolate filling and spread evenly. 7. Top with swirls of the whipped cream and garnish with the almond halves. 8. Chill at least 2 hrs. One 9-in. pie 9 Almost everybody in our town knows Kenny. He has been working in one store or an other since he was a teen-ager, and that's a long time ago. One thing about Kenny is that he has always been well-groomed. But the most important thing about him is that he wears a smile as well as he wears his suits. A while back, a few of the fellows around town began kidding Kenny a little. When they dropped into the store where he worked, he couldn't always find what they wanted. When he did, he couldn't read the price tag. The fellows gave Kenny a bad time about that. They said if he'd get to bed nights in stead of carousing around town, he'd do a better job in the daytime. Kenny always smiled and agreed. One morning Kenny didn't come to work and only then did the customers up and down the street discover that Kenny hadn't been staying out nights at all. He had been going blind. He put brads along the shelves so he could tell even better than before what he was looking for , nd how much it cost He kept sales records in - Braille, and he read volumes, but by listen ing instead of looking. So now Kenny is walking down our streets once more. He is smiling more than ever before. We smile, too, because he has kept the darkness a little further away from the rest of us. And our town is all right again.
