Lewis and Clark of the North Fleck Wins Golf Title In Playoff BAKERSFIELD. Calif. (AP) - Someday Jack Fleck may win a golf tournament within the regu lation distance. But so far he's needed a playoff to gain every victory of his career. Fleck ran his playoff record to 3-2 Sunday, out-stroking Bob Ros- burg on the first sudden-death hole to capture the $25,000 Bak crsficld Open. Fleck, best-known for his shock ing extra-round upset of Ben Ho- gan at the 1955 .National Open, birdicd the 73rd hole after he and Rosburg tied at 276. Big Ten In Favor Of Bowl CHICAGO (AP) - The Big Ten wants another Rose Bowl football contract and voted Sunday in fa vor of negotiating with the Ath letic Association of Western Uni versities. Minnesota, defeated 17-7 by Washington last New Year s Day, cast the deciding ballot for a 6-4 majority in favor of a tie-up with the Big Five of the West Coast. The measure will now be re viewed by each individual school and a final vote, considered to be a formality, will be taken at the Big Ten winter meetings in Chi cago Dec. 7-9. The Big Ten and the defunct Pacific Coast Conference had en agreement which lasted 14 years. That arrangement expired with the 1960 game after the Big Ten voted 5-5 in the spring of 1960 on the question of resuming the con tract. The deadlock vote killed the is sue but n loophole remained which permitted a Big Ten team to go to Pasadena on an individu al basis if such a team were in vited. Minnesota accepted such an invitation although it had vot ed against the Rose Bowl. Twins Renew Mele Paper MINNEAPOLIS.ST.PAUL (AP) Minnesota manager Sam Mele, given a new one-year contract to manage the Twins, said he has some definite ideas which should help to strengthen the team next year. While Mele was being named manager Sunday, the Twins were dropping an 8-3 decision to De troit. They finished in seventh! place. "The team this year was defi nitely weak on some of the main fundamentals of the game," Mele said. Mele cited poor bunting, bad throws from the outfield, indeci sion of the shortstop and second baseman as to who will cover second on steals and double plays, and general lack of infield knowledge as to w here to play as definite drawbacks the team had in 1961. U.S. Gains Davis Lead NEW DELHI (AP) - The Unit ed States advanced to the inter- zone finals of the Davis Cup ten nis competition today when Whit ney Reed of Oakland, Calif., de feated Indian's 19-year-old Jaidip Mukerjea 6-2, 6-3, 6-3. The straight set victory gave Americans a 3-1 lead on the best-of-five matches and made the fi nal match between Chuck Me Kinlcy of St. Louis and Ramana- than Krishnan a mere formality. The tpiumph of the 29-year-old Reed, oldest member of the U.S. team, sent the Americans into the intcrzone finals against Italy, Eu ropean zone champions, at Rome Oct. 13-15. Injury Fatal To Footballer PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A Lebanon Valley College football player, taken to a hospital after complaining of a headache dur ing a game Saturday, died today following emergency surgery for rcmival of a blood clot from his brain. John Zola, 20. a halfback from Hazlcton, Pa., died at 3:53 ivn.. hospital attendants said. He had undergone surgSy for removal of a blood clot shortly before mid nio6t Saturday. Zola's death was the second in college football ranks this year. Donald G. Foley. 19, Pasadena. Tex., a member of Navy's Junior varsity squad, died last Thursday of injuries sustained in practice. Dykes Fired By Indians CLEVELAND (AP) - Jimmie Dykes, fired as manager of the Cleveland Indians, says the man who will be named to pilot the; club next year faces "suicide." Dykes, given his pink slip by general manager Gabe Paul Sun day, said the new manager's job will be "murder because there are too many lawyers on the club." The Indians are expected to an nounce a new manager without delay. Mel McGaha, a Cleveland coach, has been rumored as the most likely choice. Referring to the "lawyers on the club. Dykes added: "They've got to get rid of some of them. but who's gonna take 'em? Be sides, the team needs a big re building job. They need a first baseman and a second baseman.
