Big Ten
In Favor
Of Bowl
CHICAGO (AP) - The Big Ten
wants another Rose Bowl football
contract and voted Sunday in fa
vor of negotiating with the Ath
letic Association of Western Uni
versities.
Minnesota, defeated 17-7 by
Washington last New Year s Day,
cast the deciding ballot for a 6-4
majority in favor of a tie-up with
the Big Five of the West Coast.
The measure will now be re
viewed by each individual school
and a final vote, considered to be
a formality, will be taken at the
Big Ten winter meetings in Chi
cago Dec. 7-9.
The Big Ten and the defunct
Pacific Coast Conference had en
agreement which lasted 14 years.
That arrangement expired with
the 1960 game after the Big Ten
voted 5-5 in the spring of 1960 on
the question of resuming the con
tract.
The deadlock vote killed the is
sue but n loophole remained
which permitted a Big Ten team
to go to Pasadena on an individu
al basis if such a team were in
vited. Minnesota accepted such
an invitation although it had vot
ed against the Rose Bowl.
Twins Renew
Mele Paper
MINNEAPOLIS.ST.PAUL (AP)
Minnesota manager Sam Mele,
given a new one-year contract to
manage the Twins, said he has
some definite ideas which should
help to strengthen the team next
year.
While Mele was being named
manager Sunday, the Twins were
dropping an 8-3 decision to De
troit. They finished in seventh!
place.
"The team this year was defi
nitely weak on some of the main
fundamentals of the game," Mele
said.
Mele cited poor bunting, bad
throws from the outfield, indeci
sion of the shortstop and second
baseman as to who will cover
second on steals and double
plays, and general lack of infield
knowledge as to w here to play as
definite drawbacks the team had
in 1961.

Dykes Fired
By Indians
CLEVELAND (AP) - Jimmie
Dykes, fired as manager of the
Cleveland Indians, says the man
who will be named to pilot the;
club next year faces "suicide."
Dykes, given his pink slip by
general manager Gabe Paul Sun
day, said the new manager's job
will be "murder because there
are too many lawyers on the
club."
The Indians are expected to an
nounce a new manager without
delay. Mel McGaha, a Cleveland
coach, has been rumored as the
most likely choice.
Referring to the "lawyers on
the club. Dykes added: "They've
got to get rid of some of them.
but who's gonna take 'em? Be
sides, the team needs a big re
building job. They need a first
baseman and a second baseman.
And if they get rid of (Jim)
Piersall they'll need a center
fielder." Asked whether he had any re
grets, Dykes said: "Well, I m dis
appointed that we didn't finish
higher. This is a better club than
it's shown, but those lawyers real
ly hurt." The Indians finished in
fifth place in the American
League.
Major League
Attendance
Shows Decline
By United Press International
Major league baseball attend
ance tell 5.1 per cent this year
despite the excitement of Roger
Maris assault on Babe Ruth :
home run record and a close Na
tional League pennant race.
Total attendance for the two
leagues was 18,894.518 a drop of
1.016.971. The National League fell
18.2 per cent from 10,684,963 in
i960 to 8.731,502 this year while
the expanded American League
totaled "only" 10.163,016 this sea
son compared with the eight-club
total of 9.226.526 in 1960.
The National League attendance
was the lowest for the circuit
since 1956.
The pennant-winning Cincinnati
Reds were the only team in the
NL to show a increase, with a
rise of 454.117 to 1,117,603. The
New York Yankees and the Do
trait Tigers were the only AL
teams to show an increase the
Yankees having their largest at
tendance total since 1950 and the
Tigers their best since 1951.

CLEVELAND (AP)-The Cleve
land Indians today replaced ma
jor league baseball's oldest man-
ager with its anungest. naming
35-year-old Coach Mel lcGaha to
succeed Jimmie Dykes, who will
be 65 next month. McGaha's con
tract was for one year.
McGaha, brought hexe by for
mer General Manager Frank
Lane as first base coach for t h e
1961 campaign, never played in
the major leagues. The Universi
ty of Arkansas graduate spent 11
seasons in the minors, playing
several positions and mostly in
the Texas League for Shreveport
and Houston.
As a manager for three minor
league seasons, McGaha had good
success, bringing Mobile to two
runnerup finishes and leading To
ronto to the 1960 International
League pennant.
McGaha's selection was no sur
prise. It had been expected sever
al weeks. General Manager Gabe
Paul gave Dykes his pink slip
just before the Indians' finale in
Los Angeles Sunday.
Cleveland has had a poor year
in both victories and attendance.
The won-lost record of 1961 is the!
worst in 15 years, and attendance
fell off by 225,000 from 1960 to
725,000.
Dykes said Sunday that the
man who will pilot the Indians
next year faces "suicide. He ex
plained the job will be "murder
because there are too many law
yers on the club."
