(AP) - Ninety- seven of America s top golfers Saturday were invited to compete in the 25th edition of the Augusta National Golf Club Masters Tour nament April 6-9. The USA list includes one new name on the permanent invitee section, Jay Hebert, the I960 PGA champion. The tournament, first leg of golfdom's triple crown, is restrict ed to: Masters Tournament champi ons, U.S. Open champions, U.S. Amateur champions, British Open champions, British Amateur campions, PGA champions, the 1959 Ryder Cup and Walker Cup teams; first 24 players in the I960 Masters, first 16 players in the I960 U.S. Open, quarter-finalists in the 1960 U.S. Amateur, first 8 players in the 1960 PGA, one play. cr selected by ballot by the Mas tcrs Tournament champions, one amateur selected by U.S. Ama teur champions, one professional selected by U.S. Open champions and two professionals who estab lish the best showing during the winter circuit. This year's list includes 16 Mas ters champions, 24 Open champi ons. 13 Amateur champions and Wolf quint. The Saturday Owl-Wolf game was played in the afternoon as a result of the OCE "modernized sports plan. The game marked the second time the two had met in daylight hours, the Owls hav ing hosted them in an afternoon OTI test during their previous meeting The '61 title is the third the Owls have collected while under the guidance of coach Wally Palm-berg. Tech's big victory was nothing more than an easy romp. The Owls jumped off to an early 4-0 lead over the Wolves and never looked back. By halftime they had compiled a 49-24 spread and Palmberg began running his re serves into the game. The regu lars played less than two-thirds of the game. "They all looked like champs, all the way," was Palmberg's comment. ''I've never seen the team play better defense and there was nothing wrong with their offense either. ... All in all it was a great team win," he added. Indicative of the trend of the game was the fact that "Sweet Sammy" Smith, the Owls 6-7 cen ter, pulled down more rebounds than he scored points. And this wasn't too bad, considering the fact he put 24 points on the board before his second-half re lief came in. The Owls grabbed off 63 rebounds while limiting the Wolves to 21. The regulation game ended in a 63-63 tie after Larese missed on a long set shot with four seconds left.
