' In her childhood when other children were told they were lazy, talented, stubborn' or fat, Mrs. G was told that she was "helpful." When she cleared the dinner ta ble, found her father's eyeglasses, helped her little sister into her high chair, someone .would com ment admiringly on these" serv ices and her mother would say; "Yes, Cora has always been a helpful child, not always thinking ef herself like most youngsters nowadays. Now Mrs. G as a child did not produce this "helpfulness" out of pure altruism. The truth was, she wanted praise. But because she Lodge Observes Obligation .Night Obligation night was observed t the stated meeting of Friend ship Court No. 11 at the Scottish Rite Temple, Jan. 18, with a large attendance of officers and mem bers and visiting members. Mrs. Phyllis May and William Goen, , royal matron and royal patron, presided in the east. ' . 'Wilbur Sherfy complimented the 1 officers on their work and called attention to the unusual occasion when three generations renewed their obligations at the same time: Mrs. Nellie Ricker, mother cf Mrs. Phyllis May, royal ma tron, and Mrs. Terri Greene, new member. -' The next meeting will be Feb. IS and a Valentine exchange. Members are asked to put their names on the valentines. After the close of the meeting refreshments were served in the banquet room where signs of ap proaching summer were evident. Tables were decorated with silver baskets of pansies and yellow ros es and green and yellow candles. Members in charge of the eve Ding were Mrs. Velma Krause, Mrs. Geneva Swift and Mrs. Zella 'Blankenship. v constantly was told that she want ed only to be "heloful." the couldn't know this. Soon she lost contact with nil her wishes' to get as well as to cive and learned to nuk twin. fulness her chief reason for liv ing. Just as you and I . might identify ourselves with one nunliiv like fatness nr hnH Ipmrvr nr charm as though we possessed no tuners. Mrs. G got to thinking of herself as nothine but helnful. loaay, a widow, her children grown, this exclusively helpful idea of herself is making trou ble for her. With nnhnrlv arnnnri to be helpful to, Mrs. G has lost ner reason for living. At 60, she is seriously considering Anfprintr n home for the aged. We liarents can dn m-pal Ham. age by defining children's natures for them. If Jimmv refuses tn hanp nn hie coat, let us if we must define this action as stubborn. But let us not, in the name of humility, call him a stubborn child. We just don't know enough about him to so define his nature fnr him Tf we do insist on doing so, we can ena by confining Jimmy in one quality of character so 'that he loses access to the rest of it. All Of Us have knnwn rwmlo who seem to think of themselves as one thine onlv. We've knnwn beautiful women who start going lo pieces as soon as their beauty begins to fade. We've known fat people who can't seem to get their minds off this one aspect of their bodies. We've known wit tV DeODle Who Will wound their best friends to make a joke. These are people who suffer from what psychiatrists call an "alienated identity" n warrant. j r- ti led and limited idea of themselves that locks them away from the rest of their nature. Like Mrs. G they live in only one room of the multiple qualities which compose our wondertul human nature. ' ' W f GRANDCHILDREN ef J. E. House of Langell Valley and Mr. and Mrs. John Ross of Klamath Falls are, left to right, Darel, 12, Larry, 9, and Bob, 7, sons ef Mr. and Mrs. Don Ross of Sacramento.
