Mr. and Mrs. C. Eu gene Stephenson use three sets of w indow-screening devices in a liv ing room decorated with a Danish background. They used a while and natural Danish linen in floor to ceiling draperies, low curtains suspended from handsome walnut rods, and fabric-laminated roller shades. Stephenson, an expert on light ing in decoration, used illuminat ed cornices that incorporated a series of ovals, avoiding a heavy effect by day but creating inter esting texture and shadow pat terns across the living room at night. The abacus is enclosed in a wall mounted glass case, labeled for "Use in Emergency." The abacus is noted for its lack of mechanical parts and ease of operation. It was originally de signed by the Romans and had units fives, tens, hundreds, thou- 1 1 ...U:..L. hallux, iimu m' on winfii un represented by beads which could be moved in grooves. Case's abacus is similar in style to the sunn pan still in use in much of China and other Asiatic countries. The Chinese version, which Case has displayed, uses rods rather than grooves, and al though abaci users add and su- tract more quickly than those us- ing pencil and paper, multiplica tion and division problems present more of a problem. According to several experts and students of mathematics, means of counting such as the abacus are no longer necessary, but they are so convenient and useful that civi lization can never dispense with them. The use of the abacus has in creased greatly w ithin the past few years and the time may conceiv ably come when, in its proper form, the abacus will again find the common use of five centuries ago.
