I. GEIM Director el 1 laformatloa Orrgoa Technical Institute This writer heard an interesting conversation the other day con cerning Oregon Tech. It started when someone asked what things would be. different in Klamath Fails or in Klamath County if there were no Oregon Tech. One person said that it has often seemed to him that every third car on Main Street had an OTI sticker on the back window and that he practically never went into a store without seeing some OTI stude.it, faculty wife, or staff member. A third party asked how many persons connected with OTI belonged to the churches, lodges, clubs, and organizations to which others of the group belonged. Then somtonr more, mercenary minded got started figuring finan cial angles and the conversation became too complicated and lengthy to continue here. J It did start this writer wondei- ing how many people who are in Klamath Falls now" are here be cause OTI is here that is, as a student, an OTI employe, or serv ing oil in some other capacity. How different would Klamath Falls be now if in the last days of the 1949 Oregon State Legis lature the appropriation for Ore gon Tech had failed as it ap peared for awhilu that it might? To get back to reality, that is not our problem and there are some other things that are. It is anticipated that preliminary plans for the first two buildings to be requested for the new OTI campus will be prepared by the the S.O.M. (Skidmore, Owings and Merrill) architectural firm in time for the January meeting of the Board of Higher Education. These plans will be of particular inter est . because the type of design of these first buildings will set the architectural style for all build, ings as new campus building pro. gresses. . Dean Paul Meier is using the catalogs ot all the technical insti- lutes in the nation that are of fering ECPD (Engineering Coun cil for Professional Development) approved technologies in making survey ar comparative curricu- lar offerings. This may be a start toward standardi7ing technical in stitute courses. His findings will be included in his report at the annual meeting of the ASEE (American Society for Engineer ing Education) which will be held in Kentucky in June of 1961. I LEGAL NOTICE Armal Stump, physical plant en gineer, report that booths have been completed and eight new he. liarc welders installed in the weld. ing department ready for usa next week. Basketball for the Owls will get under way again on Jan. and 7 with a two-game series against Portland State College. Half-time entertainment will feature a Chu oquin group doing a pantomime on "Running Bear" the first night and "Mr. Custer" the second night, according to "Dobie" Kin caid, athletic equipment manager. One human interest (or animal Interest) story has been develop- ine on the campus over the holi day season. A tired, sore-footed brindle hound from El Paso ar rived on the campus several days before Christmas. The name, ad dress, and phone number of his owner was on his collar, ine oil three - man team composed of Chuck Dougherty, Roy Schreiber. and Cecil Nicholson became temporary providers and are con- tinuing their attempts by phone and letter to reach Lieut. Neil Bussard in El Paso. The lieuten. ant stilt lives at the address and is probably on a trip up in this part of the country. Hal Rotrock is negotiating cam pus obstacle courses on crutches after chipping a bone in his ankle in an auto accident near Tulelake a lew nays ago. About 2,000 copies of the ab stract of the OTI catalog were mailed last week to high school students who have indicated a preference for attending Oregon Tech during high school vuua tions, according to R. L. Smith. dean of students. Dormitories will open Monday at noon for returning students Tuesday will be used for register. ing and classes will be in regular session on Wednesday. For fresh men, the beginning of winter term has a special significance. In the first place, they have recently re ceived their grades lor then- urst term in college.) In the second place, their starting of a new term is coincident with the time of making New Year' resolu tions. In the third place, they're still young enough to believe with enthusiasm that they can keep those New Year's resolutions and who does the writer, think he is to say that they can't!
