American citizens have been sending lots of dollars outside the country to buy stocks of foreign companies, bonds of other govern ments, real estate on nearby or distant shores. Other lands have been making It increasingly easy for you to in vest. And Uncle Sam puts no curbs in the way of such exporting of dollars. i A dozen or so American stock brokerage firms have helped by opening branches abroad. The original idea was to solicit trading in U.S. stocks on our exchanges, but now they're bandy for trading in foreign stocks for American in vestors. The New York Stock Exchange lists 23 common and three pre ferred foreign stocks of which 12 are Canadian, 75 bond issues of 3S foreign corporations, and a long list of foreign government bonds. - Other nations don't allow Ameri can brokers to trade directly on , their exchanges. So they deal through the brokerage firms of the land Li question. . Floating a new issue of com mon stock of a foreign corpora tion is hard here, brokers say, be cause Europeans aren't accus tomed to publishing the financial details demanded by our Secur ities & Exchange Commission. This also holds down listings on U.S. exchanges, whose rules de mand more information than Eu ropean companies normally give. Americans still run into curren cy exchange problems and also '-curbs whkti some countries still keep on withdrawal of dividend or other income, such as capital gains. In many lands stock buying must be done at the official rate of exchange rather than at the go ing rate which may be cheaper. Withdrawal of funds at any rate of exchangs is still difficult in many lands, Robert C. Hall, Bache k Co. partner, points out. England, West Germany and Italy have removed most of these curbs. The French still have a few. American investment abroad. especially by the better-heeled and more aware investors, has slowed in the last three months with the D.ice weakness on Eu ropean ana Japanese exchanges. Hall says that in the early days of the two recent foreign stock buying booms first four years ago and again 18 months ago- most buying was by highly so phisticated American traders Buying has steadily of late come from the less sophisticated.
