(AP) It wa.sn t that tourists didn t want to visit a certain village in Michi gan's Upper Peninsula. They just didn't know it was there. So residents solved the problem of visitors unknowingly going through their community by vot ing to change its name from De Tour to DcTour Village. The complaint, said the State Highway Department, was thai highway signs read: "DeTour 44 miles." The highway department has agreed to inform visiting molorists with new signs reading: "DeTour Village 44 miles." RAY ANTHONY MAGGIE HAYES Buried Worker Saved By Chums PORTLAND (AP) Fellow workers dug out alive a compan ion completely buried by dirt Monday in the cavcin of a sewer project. Italph Prouly, 4H, of Portland, was reported in good condition at Emanuel Hospital. He had been shoring up the sides of an eight tool-deep sewer trench when a wall of dirt tell on him. Suribachi the day it was captured in 1945 says the lamous Joe Rosenthal photograph of the flag raising "definitely was not a phony." Rosenthal and others have re peatedly denied that the Iwo Jima picture was somehow faked or po.-ed. but the story keeps crop ping up. The latest denial came Monday from Louis Lowery, a Marine staff sergeant on Iwo Jima at the time and now photographic direc tor for the Marines' Leatherneck magazine. He spoke out after the question was raised again in a Sunday tele vision play in the lines of an ac tor portraying the late Ira Hayes, one of the Marines shown in Ro senthal's picture. GRANGE NEWS Mrs. Bessie Christopher, state Grange District 5 Home Econom ics Club chairman from Bend, pre sided and urged members to work toward organizing more home eco nomics clubs within local granges during a Klamath County Home Economics Club Conference in Shasta View Grange Hall recently. Though the county has 10 grange units, she said, it has only four home economics clubs and should have more. She also asked members to hack up their respective grange mas ters wilh community service proj ects. And she reviewed several upcoming homcmaking contests for which local members are eligible. Mrs. Christopher urged club members to send quarterly reports to headquarters faithlully and on time, with stories of activities in cluded. Deadlines are April in. Inly 10, October 10 and January 10. She also made an effort to re. emit linaneial assistance from Klamath County grangers for the Spence Memorial Scholarship Fund, since a local girl, Rosalie Caldwell of Shasta View Grange, won the award last year. Young Driver Holding Own MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. 1 AP) A young motorist who had a LW-foot section of a l'-inch bridge railing pass through his body and still lived was reported "holding his own" today. Officials at Community Hospital said Bruce E. Wixon, 24, of Barry Ion, Mich., was in fair condition and "doing all right." Wixon was pierced by the rail Sunday when his car skided on ice and crashed through the guard rail. The car plunged to a frozen mill pond below the bridge, knock ing Wixon unconscious, lie re vived and managed to start the car heater until rescuers reached him. Sheriff Donald Ramsdill, who said the incident was "the most unusual thing I ever saw." said the pipe barely missed Wixon's stomach and liver. Turbulence Probe Slated WASHINGTON (AP) The Weather Bureau wants to find out more about, wind turbulence in clear weather the kind of turbu lence that may have caused a re cent airliner crash that killed H3 persons. "The problem has become more acute in recent years with the in creased speed and height of jet aircraft." Weather Bureau chief F. W. Rcichelderler said Monday The plane disaster near Tell City, Ind., March 17 probably was caused by air turbulence or an ex plosion, Civil Aeronautics Board investigators hae indicated. They found a structural tailurc in the wreckage of the Northwest Air lines prop-jet Elcctra. Speed lunils have since been set for the Elcctra planes. Iicichelderfer said the general conditions that cause such turbu lence arc known, but meteorolo gists don't have enough intorma- tion to forecast it and warn pilots in advance.
